I hate to say this, but I don't see much NHL upside with Mailloux. IMHO, every time I see him, I notice heavy feet and a slow brain. Also at times he makes things in his end an adventure, very Brisebois-like, but he is doing this in the AHL.

He has obvious NHL skills and size, but he still has a ways to go to make the NHL roster.

He has all of the tools, but you're right to be cautious in your projection. The processor seems slow and while his top speed is very good, he lacks quickness and agility, but not any less than a guy like Kovacevic who people here have been crying like babies about. He needs time though, strength and tools can go a long way when you add lots of experience.

I never once thought of him as having heavy feet, Thorpe, Martone, those guys have heavy feet for sure. Mailloux's problems to me have always been the IQ, decent tools but no tool box. He's big, mobile, long reach, good shot, can move the puck but can you live with the poor decisions? It should all come down to how well does his offense translate over the next few years.

He's 21 till the end of the season, has only played under 100 games in the OHL and 88 as a pro between NHL/AHL. He's got 60 pts in the AHL in 83 games so clearly the offensive production has been elite so far but it will likely take a couple years to work with him to hopefully get him to at least somewhat passable decision making.

I need to post this, but please take it with a grain of salt.

On RDS' latest Rocket broadcast, during an intermission, they had given several players a cassette tape in its' case. They told them to get the tape out. They all figured it out eventually, except that Mailloux took painfully long. At times he looked like he was trying to solve a Rubik's Cube. I had to give my head a shake.

As a side point Mesar opened the case instantly. He gave me the impression that cassettes are still a widely used medium in Slovakia.

Mailloux's feet work at the same pace as his processor which was his problem going back to junior.
There is absolutely nothing instinctive about his play he has to think first before he reacts so he looks slow.
He's great when he doesn't have a decision to make.

Well said, I believe that if he is going to develop into a quality NHL dman it is going to take some serious time in the AHL, perhaps with some stints in the NHL. He will not be the offensive weapon that people thought he would be as he doesn't process the game fast enough and he will need to play a much safer game and really concentrate on using his size/strength to be an impactful defender. The shot is great and he will get some goals due to that but he is not a facilitator or a PP QB imo.

His IQ has always been a huge concern and it likely will never be a strength but if his pattern recognition skills receive enough reps he may become a passable defender. There is absolutely a serious bust factor with him and it will take patience to allow him an opportunity to advance. I called the notion that he was ahead of Reinbacher a silly one as Reinbacher is so much smarter and has better feet. Unfortunately he got hurt but there is no doubt in my mind that Mailloux is not the lock that some were referring to him as before the season started.

Physical tools can take you a long way though. That shot is absolutely awesome.

Mailloux still has upside but at this point I would use him as an asset to grab a future core player for the Habs, before he Barron’s out.

Reaction time seems to be a problem with him too. I'm not sure development time will help much for that. It didn't for Barron.

We went from having three promising young RD down IMO to just David Reinbacher. Barron is now officially the 7th D and Mailloux unless his skating improves wont make it. I am not writing Mailloux off but I am not as optimistic as I was. Right now the only Dmen prospect in Laval that could make is Engstrom.
