Mailloux was genuinely not an exaggeration in his very short stint one of the worst defensive players I have ever seen. He was head and shoulders above the very bad defensive players that are still on the team. This is not a let him play through his mistakes type of thing. The eye test and the analytics both support this. I wouldn't care if he had 3 points a game in the AHL if you're a genuine liability every time you're on the ice against NHL competition without fail you need more work.

He's young and insanely high upside I don't want to see him flailing in the NHL when he can destroy AHL competition for another year while working on his deficiencies

I liked him, he just skates like ass. Dude had trouble making a simple pivot. Like others have said, he's already better than Barron and Struble in my book. These two are blend as f*** and have no upside whatsoever.

He's better off playing 20+ minutes in the AHL on a winning team with structure though, that's for sure.

9 pts in 4 games in laval. This is more than 2 pts/ per game
3 prs in 5 games in MTL.
He doesnt deserve to stay in Laval. Being him here, and we live with his weakness. I mean, we need to developp player this year.
We may want to wait in this.

Does it make sense for him to develop here while the club’s a gong show? Might be better to wait until things stabilize or maybe wait for next year. Laval have won seven in a row. At least he’s in a winning environment right now.

Without the NHL paycheck….

No. He is on a two-way contract. AHL salary when he is down there.

I think Reinbacher is receiving NHL money because he was still at the NHL camp when he got injured.

Wasn't it the preseason though? Not sure if that counts, I'm sure one of the. nerds here know

Almost every word of this post is incorrect.

It doesn't mean that any or all of these three will be quality NHL dmen although I think Struble is a lock but your assessment is grossly inaccurate

The guy is dominating at Laval. I guess he has an eye sight problem when he's in Montreal? Or maybe it's a Marty system problem?

It's a AHL vs NHL problem. Competition is increased and time/space is harder to manage. The other layer is our D has too many young pieces.

Also, if you put Mailloux on Tampa or the Bruins and he looks much better. Easier to slide in a D core that is already strong.

It's confidence, in the NHL he's concerned about making mistakes, in the AHL he can just play his game.
After the bag skate, the entire team was afraid to make mistakes. Marty pointed out that the team played it YOO safe agaInst the Pens at times.

Agree with the bolded, but they also have a responsability to recognise when they made a mistake and move on from it

But the thing about being in a rebuild means you use every second you have to determine whether or not it is a mistake. You can't afford to get it wrong and they should use every second of evaluation time they have with Barron.

Mailloux should be in the NHL way before Strubble, Barron and even Xhekaj

No, he shouldn't. He's played too few games since his draft year, covid, suspensions, etc. He is the worst defensive player of the 4 by a wide margin. They have the luxury to keep him developing in Laval and they should continue to do so.

i think its coming from a place of nervousness. I think a good year in AHL will be good. Dont need to rush. Make sure he knows his game and ask him to bring that when he is in the nhl. I think its just a confidence thing with him and he just needs to adjust to the speed in the nhl.

really really clunky backward/lateral skating. This will keep him out of a top4 role.

i really dont mind the kid, he's got some O upside, however i doubt, much like other habs Dmen, that he will have any kind of impact until this outrageously awful defensive team shores up its game.

i could see him as a 2pp, 5-6 guy. Lots of work to do still.

What does it accomplish this year? As I said, everyone thinks as soon as a player in Laval gets a few points, he should get called up. Mailloux, Roy, Dobes, Hughes. You’re essentially taking a player from a winning environment where they play prominent roles and you’re sticking them on a losing team where they’ll probably play much less prominent roles. It’s been done and it hasn’t worked. It won’t move the needle AT ALL for the Habs. Leave them in Laval. The team finally has a very competitive roster and should go deep. If the Habs were competitive and looked to be making the playoffs, then I’d agree. Then it would be a good environment to bring in a young player.

Thank you! If this was Florida, or Winnipeg, or another top team, and there was an opening, then I’d say yes. In those examples, the kid would be coming in slowly and in much better circumstances. Anyone entering Montreal right now is essentially getting thrown to the wolves unfortunately. They cannot add more kids to this team. If they get a healthy Laine back soon, and Slaf and they figure out the defensive issues, then I’d expect them to turn things around. That’ll probably be too late though. I’m expecting this to be a lost season with a high pick.
