All because they rushed the rebuild wasting cap space on JT.

JT inflated the salaries early and the players knew overpaying 4 forwards wouldn't work.

Just waiting for the contract "expert" to scold you about how JT's contract had no impact on 16 & 34's deals.

Just gleaning from the presser I get the feeling that Shanny is basically suggesting "I was wrong about this core" and Dubas probably wanted to make the right moves in the offseason. The RIGHT moves as it were but Shanny shut him down and then prevented him from going over his head.

If this turns out to be true, it will be evidence that Dubas was right and is a much faster learner than Shanny. Something seemed off about that firing and it had to do with power struggle and philosophy differences perhaps.

Here is my theory:

First let me start off by saying that Shanny is 100% to blame for this massive f*** up by hiring dubas in teh first place.

Shanny basically let dubas do his crap for the first few years IMO, did not interfere much.. Later when Dubas was continuing to F-up Shanny intervened to stop f***ing over teh Leafs even more.

Shanny hired Treliving, Tre's approach to hockey is completely the opposite of the shit/childish/STUPID approach of dubas. Shanny has to support his GM's vision now as he did the previous one.

Long story short. Shanny is to blame but he also has to go along with his GM, especially the new GM he hired i.e. Treliving. And more importantly.... In Treliving WE TRUST! Not Shanny!

I agree except on one thing. I think Shanahan actually became the most attached to the core. I'm not sure if that's because Dubas left the cupboards so bare and he worried what would happen if the team lost one, or if it's because he romanticized his experience with Detroit finally breaking through, but I think this is the first time he's finally given up on them. I don't think it's even the core he's given up on. He's given up on Marner and recognizes that Tavares is aging.

Shanahan is extremely lucky if they actually unload Marner and change the look of the team. I won't be surprised at all if they go further with a new coach, system, pp, pk, and defence. An additional 11M to spend on players that aren't self proclaimed gods would go a long way.

If they make it to a conference final (massive if) I bet Shanahan is extended (not that I want him to.) Marner's NMC might be the difference between Shanahan losing his job or not imo.

So what's your theory? I have one but I'm not allowed to say.

The clap?

If a player signs a new contract before his existing contract expires, do the terms of that new contract go into effect immediately?

If so, maybe they can renegotiate with JT so that he plays for a lower salary as say, the third line center. That might be easier than asking him to waive and uproot his young family, but still gives them millions in cap space. The captaincy is another issue that can be addressed once next year's team is assembled (Matthews is not the right guy, so let's see who comes in who might be captain material).

I know people are reading between the lines and thinking its Mitch Marner (I want him gone too), but I think they might be trying Tavares instead.

For all the talk about how our offense dries up in the playoffs, I just don't think they want to trade a skilled young player just yet.

Tavares is older and is taking up a lot of money. He's had some key goals for the leafs for sure but it hasn't been enough either

This was the first time in his career that Matthews missed a game due to "illness".
is there a good source that "lists" all the reasons ?

Nylander gets a migraine -> team worries about a concussion.

Matthews gets sick -> team worries about a concussion.

Translation; The Leafs Medical staff is overcalling concussions.

But maybe that's the real reason Pelley got hired, to save money.
Spending to the NHL cap is the least of MLSE's financial concerns.

No, his $11m cap for 24-25 is set in stone.

What’s concerning about what he said exactly?
Pretty much everything. He looked broken, and ready to twist the knife that he stabbed into this era's potential last year. No vision forward. No conviction. Just frustration and confusion, mixed with enough apathy to really destroy things.
I agree it's concerning that it took him this long to admit running it back again after so many playoff failures is really stupid.
You seem to not be listening to what he actually said again.

Hahaha! No.

Would love to hear this theory. Are you able to DM me?
I don't think we have that function anymore.

I think you’re being a little dramatic. Basically he said this group will never get it done and it’s time to make some changes. So, what should have been done years ago

You drive for show (regular season) and putt for dough (playoffs). Seems obvious he now accepts like most of us that we can't putt.

I thought Willy's contract went into effect right away?
23-24 is/was the last year of his old deal. Only his NMC went into effect when he signed his extension.

I don't think the NHLPA agreement could allow a redirection of an existing contract like that. Also that would open the door to a new way for clubs to circumvent the cap so the clubs wouldn't want that either. I suspect Willies NM clause was considered adding something as a retroactive bonus to the new agreement rather than altering the existing deal.

Or following league-mandated protocols. Impossible to say. Think we know enough about concussions and head injuries to know that they need to be taken seriously and thoroughly. It doesn't sound like in either case, it was an easily diagnosed issue, leading to issues and time off the ice.
