Great article, Gann. It's one of the aspects of goaltender evaluation I overlook - how deep players play in the net. So this discussion and introduction of different dynamics is definitely enlightening!

Nice article. Taking nothing away from Enroth, there seems to be a pattern of our backup goalies being pretty awesome for us over the last 3 or 4 years. We have our own little goalie polishing factory, they come in looking average, get shined up by our coaches, look stellar behind our defensive system, get moved for a decent pick. rinse, repeat. Its like having an extra 2nd/3rd round pick up our sleeves.

its a beautiful thing. Bernier/Jones/Scrivens and now Enroth have all held their own

I think that's a real tribute to the goalie coaching. Even with some of the legends elsewhere, take Bernier as an example--when he struggles it often takes him a long time to put it back together, arguably he's pretty messed up now. Jones in SJ. Scrivens. You name it. Here, these guys get practice and a tune up when things are going poorly and get back to a crazy good level quickly. Even Quick.

Trust me. It's the coaching.

Nothing to take away from Ranford, but I really think it's more about playing behind the kings, and their system. Sure, Ranford made some adjustment(s), but a goalie needs the have the confidence in his team in front of him as well. Either ways, I'm just happy that Enroth is off to a good start, which really shouldn't be a surprise.

That may go for a few teams, too; Montreal comes to mind. Keep in mind Enroth was coming from tire-fire-defense Buffalo and Dallas teams, it has to be night-and-day for him here!

That's why I said it's both the Kings and Ranford that's making the difference. This is also why I'm more open to trading Qucik than most on here.

Totally, I was agreeing and reinforcing your point :)

Re: Quick, I really need to re-find this article I read about his skillset, I think it would paint a different picture for people around here, but it essentially said while goaltenders that play that way may be more volatile, their abilities allow them to make saves typical butterfly goaltenders can't/won't (hence the big-game, big-save goaltender label), but also leaves them more vulnerable on a day-to-day basis. The typical butterfly goaltender will get you save volume and all the routine stuff, but will have a harder time saving your bacon. I've seen too much from Quick in clutch moments to agree with that until he starts fading in the crunch.

I'm just open to it is all. I think Quick MAY be moved due to cap reason, but other than that, I don't see him being moved.

13 starting goalies have a higher cap hit than Quick at this moment, and that number is only going to go up as others get signed. Unless DL suddenly buys into the 'replacement-level goaltending' hooplah, I can't see it.
