Player Discussion Linus Ullmark (G)

Ullmark deserves credit in getting the Sens into the playoffs with his play, especially the run that he was on in December just before he got injured.

Green deserves credit in getting the team to play a more defensive style of play.
Going from 281 goals against in 2023-24 to 234 goals against in 2024-25 is huge.

Staois deserves credit in bringing in veteran players like Ullmark, Jensen, Perron, Amadio, Cousins and for the deadline deals that he made for Cozens & Zetterlund.

The secret weapon in getting us to the playoffs was Merilainen.
His .925 Save % along with 1.99 GAA & his 8-3-1 record in the middle of the season when Ullmark was injured, saved the season.
Nice to see that Leevi gets the call-up as the #3 for the playoffs:

Will be good for him to be around the team and gain the experience.

I wonder who Ottawa will call up for the Black Aces?

Black Aces:
Merilainen G
Sebrango LD - Guennette RD/Davies LD
Reinhardt LW - Halliday C - MacEwan RW
Crookshank LW - Jenik C - Hodgson RW

Yes all three goaltenders played a role in the Sens make the playoffs!

All of the goals were explainable. Lousy team defense and great finishing by the Leafs.

But Ullmark didn’t do the team any favours. And Stolarz made several high danger saves.

He starts every game regardless; forget the Levi/Anton talk. But he needs to assert himself.

I don’t think Ullmark was terrible, just average at best.

The real blame is on all the dumb penalties they took. He could have been better but still, you can’t win spending a game on the PK.

I would have him on a short leash though. Another questionable game and I’d be looking at putting Meri in who is a big reason the sens are even in the playoffs at all.

I'm inclined to stick with Linus. We have him signed long term for a lot of money. He needs to learn to play in the playoffs at some point. He reminds me other Bobrovsky in multiple playoffs before the last two.
Even though he was Swiss cheese tonight would give him one more game of rope. Team made it difficult despite the shot clock after 20 min. But if he fails again next game NEED to insert Levi. Ullmark is a career playoff choker and would rather throw Hail Mary vs continue with damaged goods

I am ride or die with Linus. Our PK was absolute garbage tonight. We gave Toronto basically open season in the slot. Look at the goals. Granted Linus could have stopped some, most were too high a quality. If the Senators actually had those chances, the game would have been a lot closer than we saw. This team as a whole shit the bed a bit tonight. Our five v five looked good, but everywhere else we sucked. The playoffs is all about special teams. We need to win the special teams game.

Anyone here who believes that Meri would have had a different outcome in this game is not being realistic about the chances that were given to Toronto by our team.

The sens had just as many high danger chances. All of the leafs ones went in. Flip the goalies and its an opposite result.

If he plays like that again they don't have a choice. The first goal was just so bad. Stolarz was great and Ullmark wasn't remotely close.
The first goal he needs to make a save. Two on the PP off rebounds. Can't give those shots up. Have to get to those rebounds. One off of Highmore's arm that was an obvious redirect.. Marner's breakaway he didn't look great because he was backing in. The other one was knies on an in tight play.

He wasn't great but the Leafs got a few that they maybe don't usually get.

And Stolarz. Better to be lucky than good. He didn't move on the Zetterlund shot and it hit the shaft of his stick.

I said before this started, for the Leafs to win, Stolarz has to outplay Ullmark. He did last night. They still need to win 3 more games

Ullmark is the playoff performer we thought he was….. should have been pulled after 3 goals in the first 8 shots…..

Ullmark is really Dr jekyll and Mr hyde you never know wat you are going to get often he looks "stiff frozen and his movements looks terrible like in the game in Toronto. But 50% of the games when he looks more relaxed plays more to his instincts not like a robot he is one of the best in the league but this comes not often enough and terrible to see the bad version Ullmark in the playoffs.

His save % was around 750, he was terrible there is no sugar coating it. The blame is mostly on LU

If Ullmark would have been on it still would have been a 3-2 or 4-2 game. The Sens can't be gifting the Leafs 4 or 5 high danger chances as they will surely capitalize on a couple. That and the D can't be pushed around like Knies did on the 6th goal.

Save percentage is a poor way to look at it. Ullmark needs to be better but the team shouldn't be allowing Ekman Larson to walk into the slot untouched , Marner to be gifted a breakaway , Tavares to grab a rebound unchallenged etc. Team had too many breakdowns resulting in high quality chances.

That Knies goal is the exact deficiency that our D core has with the way it's constructed. It's a very soft core and not really built to deal with large players in our crease. We made the playoffs but we don't have a D core built for the playoffs yet.

Tbh, we should have outbid Toronto for Carlo.
