the GM must make a trade for an established NHL goaltender, preferably on an expiring contract... someone like a Dan Vladar or another impeding UFA

I'm really starting to question if Ullmark, who we have for 3 more seasons after this one, can be a full time goalie. The greatest player ability is availability and this is the 3rd time he has missed games this year because of various ailments.

I'm concerned we just paid $8.25M/year for a #1 goalie that can only play 40 games a year.

correction...FOUR more seasons....

It's a herniated disc and not something that will go away this season. He just has to manage it and hope the pain and discomfort subsides. The only way to fix it is surgery which is typically 3+ months from what I understand. He hopefully is ok to get us to April, and then can have the surgery.
I have a herniated disc.. at C7 old Rugby injury... It can be managed but when it flairs up the nerve swells and it is aggravated causing pain in the path of the nerve . It can take a while to settle down but it lurks beneath the surface when it does . I would not think trying to manage it in his position would be the course of action. Surgery to me back in the day was kind of scary and I went the manage it route but .. its tricky and I don't have the rigors of an NHL player. I don't know his circumstances re when the injury occurred but at this point there is not many options and its a little suspect it wasn't addressed sooner.

Yeah the only time anyone mentioned a herniated disc was one random guy, in this thread.

Maybe that's what it is but this is hardly substantiated

Did he even go to HF medical school? No idea.

Actually he signed a new contract for an AAV of $8.25 million, beginning next season. He’s only making 5 million this season….
He's actually only making 4.5 this season, but to Burrow's point, he has indeed secured a contract that will pay him 33 mil over the following 4 years. He has no reason to fight through injuries right now for his next contract, it's already signed and locked in.

My original reply (below) on this topic was to SensFactor, who was under the assumption that the new contract was already in force (3 more season), not Burrow…..

I am quite sure if he could play he would play. We don't know the injury, we don't know the level of pain. I don't think this is about not having to play for his next contract

That may be the case, if it were playoffs, maybe he's playing, lalime apparently did when he really shouldn't have, while Hasek didn't when teammates thought he could, so who knows.

I do think that playing through a back issue usually leads to things getting worse not better, so I'd rather he give it some rest at the moment

So almost doubling down on he could play but he has a comfy contract so why bother , but not quite

Pro athletes want to play. You don't get to this level by slacking off when you can.

If he isn't even skating, it is because he can't, not lack of will.

If that's what you get from it so be it, I'd frame it as he doesn't have the worry about his long security being on the line if he doesn't play (next contract), so he might be more likely to opt not to put his health on the line by putting himself in a situation where he potentially could end his career due to health (career ending aggrivation of his current injury).

I'd agree, players however have a tendency to play through things they shouldn't, particularly when there is more on the line than a few reg season games.

Every year, players play through things in the playoffs that would keep them out of the reg season, so the point is "can he play through it" is not so black and white as it's being portrayed as.

He got on an honorary certificate from the Recchi school

Ullmark has played an average of 34 games per season (I didn't include 2016-17 and 2017-18 where he played 1 and 5 games respectively).

He has already played 23 games this year. That means he has about 11 games left to play. There are 44 games left in this season.

He is 31 years old.

I am not confident we can get to the playoffs if he only gives us 11 more games.
