Losing Ulmark is a huge blow, but this team has to prove that they can overcome some adversity before any of us can really believe in them, or themselves for that matter. This is as good a time as any.

If they can rally around whoever the f*** is in nets, and play at 500 till Ulmark comes back . .. could be a huge confidence boost for everyone.

The next stretch could potentially decide the season though. Its nice to have big games in January for a change.
Its got to be the next man up mentality. When you have injuries, that’s what it boils down to.

Also, its a team game. If Ottawa plays strong team D, that will reduce the need for stellar goaltending.

I think everybody should assume that he is a tandem goalie, until it is proven otherwise.

They need someone else who can play 30-40 games. In a perfect world, one of the RFA goalies would be ready for that by next year, and we could bridge them at similar money to what Forsberg makes now to keep the tandem at around 10M or so.
Which goalie is being paid 8 million to be a tandem goalie.

For 8 million I expect minimum 60 starts.

60+ games is very rare for any goalie now. That is an unrealistic expectation. He has been a 40 game goalie his entire career. 40-50 games would be realistic. Tandems are increasingly more common in the league, but it's pretty evident that Ullmark is a goalie whose workload has to be managed more than some starters.

People are out of touch with the new market for goalies. Look what Colorado just paid MacKenzie Blackwood to be a middle of the road starter, 5.25M. The reality is that 8M starting in 2025-26 isn't what it once was. That's before you even factor in the Ottawa tax.

Ullmark being a tandem goalie is likely the reason we were able to get him for what we did.

I understand the history and the impact its had on Senator fans.

I do think fans are headed for disappointment though if they expect stellar goaltending for more than 60 games.

Sometimes the team has to bail out a goaltender as well.

I think the team has been doing pretty well in limiting high danger chances, and shots in general, on a consistent basis. They are one of the better team defensively based on stats and the eye test.

Every team has multiple breakdowns per game, and it’s at those times where the goalie has to make an excellent save or two.

The problem we have is that other than Ullmark, our goalies have tended to let in a goal or two that should have been a routine save.

The sats also bear out that this team really only needs average goaltending to be consistently successful. The players and coaching staff are doing their part so far in my opinion, it’s consistent average goaltending that has been a struggle outside of Ullmark.

Glad to see that they got 2 points out of the so called write off. :p
For sure!

I think we also got to see the real Sogaard and the real Merileinen - and I'll be upset if Mads gets any more opportunities.

Don't know if Forsberg is back for Thursday, but hopefully he can get healthy and find some form so the Sens can run him and Merileinen until Ullmark is ready.

I don't want him playing much at the 4 Nations. Not sure how many games he'll see considering they have two other very capable starters in Gustavsson and Markstrom.

I hope he plays and plays well. Would be great for him and to know we have a goalie who is tops in the league

The only thing I care about in that tournament is for all Senators players to hopefully come back healthy.

I’d have a lot more sympathy if it was an actual tournament of note and not a glorified all-star game that the NHL is vainly trying to turn into something serious.

As it stands, does anyone think that this will have any kind of lasting historical legacy?

I don’t hear a lot of people reminiscing fondly about the final of the last World Cup between Team Europe and Canada.

These days, when the NHL tries to do international hockey without the IIHF being involved in any real capacity, they f*** it up.
