How are you tanking?

Players aren’t gonna tank - they’re playing for contracts.

We hired a new coach who sure as shit isn’t gonna tank.

How are you tanking? If you trade Hayes, Spooner, Zucc and Skjei this offseason and play vets, you’re on the right track.

Short of that? It ain’t happening.

If by tanking ppl mean intentionally trying to lose or go for the 1oa then I don't see it. It's impossible with Henrik and even the semblance of defensive structure in front of him.

Pretty sure they mean letting Howden, Hajek , Lindgren develop in the minors and others like McLeod , Claesson are fillers

Not the best lineup but they don’t care cause it’s a long term approach

first i think it needs to be clarified that tanking and losing on purpose isn't the same as not having a very good team and being bad. we are not going to try to lose, but we also won't be very good

and i think the rangers have proven that they don't want to create a losing culture by the fact that they have kept so many veterans around. they want to be competitive each night. the win/loss record might not be that good but they don't want to get blown out each night

as far as not wanting kids to be in a losing environment...well that imo is an argument for keeping them in hartford together unless they are so good in camp that you have no choice. there is gonna be a lot of losing in ny this year, so if that concerns you let the kids win together in hartford for now

A lot of people have Nieves in the lineup and great if he makes it but I think Lettieri is better . Guys like Lindqvist , Holland , Belesky , McLeod are likely spares

Still cap space for a cap dump like Cally too

i think those fillers are there because there is a good chance alot of those kids aren't ready yet. IMO the absolute dream scenario for the organization would be for Chytil, Anderson, Howden, Hajek, and Lindgren to all blow everyone away in camp and force their way onto the team. that would put you a year ahead of schedule for the long term plans if they were ready this year. but of course odds are much higher that, especially the last 3, are gonna need atleast a 1/2 season in the ahl so you are maybe looking at them down the stretch after the trade deadline

Agreed some of those kids are going to be coming up w an injury and when they deal a guy like Spooner or Zuc at the deadline

Yes, I doubt that Vesey will get more than a 4th line role this season, and maybe some were sceptical about his recent contract signing based on that reasoning, but I like some experienced players on that line as well. But it depends if Gorton going to move Spooner in near future..

How would you feel if Andersson was on the 4th line but got top pk duties and 2nd PP time? I think his ice time would even out.
I'd prefer not to have him in a situation that limits his 5v5 minutes. I'd like to see him get special teams time, but he'll ultimately play the majority of his time at even-strength, so we should figure out how to optimize that for both he and Chytil.

Letteri sucks. He's fine as a call up option, but shouldn't even be close to an everyday NHL player.

Kreider-Zib-Buch
Namestnikov-Chytil-Zucc
Andersson-Hayes-Spooner
Vesey-Nieves/Fontaine-Fast

Defense will be Skjei, Shatty, Pionk, Staal as the 4 locks. Deangelo/Smith/Claesson/Lindgren/Bigras/O Gara/Hajek will be in contention for the 3rd pairing, likely ADA and Smith.

What I'd like to see:

Kreider-Zibanejad-Spooner
Namestnikov-Hayes-Zuccarello
Andersson-Chytil-Buchnevich
Vesey/Beleskey-Nieves-Fast

Skjei-Shattenkirk
Smith-Pionk
Claesson-DeAngelo

PP1
Kreider-Zibanejad-Buchnevich
Shattenkirk-Zuccarello

PP2
Fast-Hayes-Spooner
Pionk-DeAngelo

PK forward pairings
Hayes-Fast
Namestnikov-Zuccarello
Zibanejad-Kreidet

PK defence pairings
Smith-Pionk
Skjei-Shattenkirk

Spooner scores a ton but is a boat anchor in terms of driving play in most situations. But he showed that with the right teammates he can be a part of a dominant line (DeBrusk-Krejci-Spooner). Give him a shot on the top line and we might catch lightning in a bottle. Fast takes Spooner's spot if it doesn't work out (KZF was even better than KZB last year, similar CF% rel, better xGF% rel with tougher deployment).

The second line is a matchup line with an offensive punch, pretty self-explanatory.

The third line has a lot of offensive potential but might struggle against tough competition. Use them like Torts used Wolski-Stepan-Zuccarello back in 2010-11 and we might have a 55+ GF% line with limited minutes.

The fourth line is made up of what's left. Fast moves up if one of Spooner/Andersson/Chytil struggles with their role.

Staal-Pionk was a nightmare last year and I don't want to neuter DeAngelo's offensive game by forcing him to cover for yet another "steady" defenceman. Claesson seems like a legitimate defensive D and should be a good partner for DeAngelo, like he was to Karlsson and Wideman in Ottawa.

Why not have Nieves and Vesey kill penalties? And Andersson too. I want Namestnikov to show how geed defensively he is by having him kill penalties.

Why would we ask the Penguins fans how they feel about tanking when they never tanked (with regards to this recent era - not Mario almost 40 years ago)

they definitely did, shamelessly between 2001 and 2005/06 even chose unproven coaches for it.

What do we think the PP units are going to look like? My guess:

Zib-Kreider-Buch
Zucc-Shatty

Names-Andersson-Chytil
ADA-Hayes
I would think Shattenkirk-Pionk or Shattenkirk-DeAngelo would be on the first PP unit. Or, put Pionk in Hayes' spot, and put Hayes in Andersson's spot.

------------Kreider Zuccarello
Zibanejad-------------Buchnevich
------------Shattenkirk

-------------Hayes Spooner
Zibanejad--------------Chytil
------------ Shattenkirk

Is how I would run the PP units. Yes I know I have Zibanejad/Shattenkirk on both units. Can swap them with Fast/DeAngelo when they need a change.

Gut instinct is that they will try and ice 4 2A-3A lines. With one of those being a sheltered offensive unit, two that can matchup.

Spoons-Hayes-Zucc

Jimmy-Andy-Lindquist/Meskanen

Staal-Shatts
Skjei-Pionk
Smith-Ada
Freddy-Ogara

I’m also hoping Lettieri or one of the two Euro signings are good enough to make the team to add that righty shot for the second unit

Yea one of those guys would work too. I'd also be fine just playing Shattenkirk the full 2 minutes and then replacing Zibanejad with DeAngelo on the second unit.

Kreider-Zibanejad-Buchnevich
Namestnikov-Chytil-Zuccarello

Most likely Nieves is the 13th forward. Maybe Beleskey if he has a good camp.

LD-RD
Skjei-Shattenkirk
Staal-Pionk
Smith-DeAngelo
Claesson

Lundqvist-Georgiev

I hope I'm not being too optimistic thinking McLeod plays in Hartford.
