Power ended up with just 2:57 minutes of ice time in the opening frame, per The Buffalo News' Mike Harrington.

The 22-year-old rearguard wasn't the only player who rode the pine during the contest. Forward JJ Peterka saw just one shift in the second period.

"We turned the puck over too much," Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff said. "We got to the blue line, turned it over, turned it over, turned it over. That is why some guys lost ice time."

He added, "Taking one or two shifts (away) up to this point hasn't worked. Sitting the odd guy out hasn't worked. The puck management, we've talked about that since the start of the year."

Ruff conceded he thought both players "really responded well" to their extended time watching from the bench.

"I know that's a culture change," he said.

Hopefully the guys learn soon...

Yeah. It ain't turning the ship around. The young players are going through growing pains and learning bad habits while they lack support. Sucks, but this isnt something that can be solved with a benching. They need to revamp the defense and retool the top-6. They need veterans. The next GM needs to pick his core, and build around it. A retool could go a long way.

For this season, most likely. For Power’s and Peterka in the long term? I disagree.

One of the lessons I learned from teaching is that you often don’t see the true effect you’re having on a student until much later. Years ago I helped a 10th grader who was failing my class regain her confidence and claw back to passing by focusing on her attitude and habits. Two years later she was a high honor roll student and off to college.

So I don’t believe this is entirely futile. As bad as the team is.

for this season, to reach the playoffs, is what I meant. I should have stated that.
