Had a very long career on tv and Broadway. She was all set to be a full time cast member of Barney Miller when she was cast in the lead for Alice
This sucks, have some good childhood memories of 'Alice'..
I saw Lavin on a recent episode of 'Elsbeth', and it was a cool surprise to see her still working.
Rest in peace ~

I think everyone of certain age has a special place for Lavin from Alice and her brief stint on Barney Miller. Sadly only Polly "Kiss my grits" Holiday is left from the original show. She kept working up to the very end. She only found out she was sick right before Xmas.

It is one of those great sliding doors things. They wanted to add her full time to Barney MIller when she auditioned for Alice, which of course she was the lead. Gregory Sierra was getting ready leave Barney Miler and Lavin was the first choice to replace him but she went with Alice for several reasons beyond being the lead. She gave an interview where she suggested the network was already planning on hooking her up with Wojo and Danny Arnold, while already fighting the network said it could be an interesting dynamic and help grow both characters. Lavin's Character on Miller was just a "little mean and tough"

Can’t say I knew the name, her prime was before my time. But I recognized the face, and realized that she was just in “No Good Deed” on Netflix. 87 years old and she was still somewhat active in acting. RIP
