Limit the number of NMC/NTC

NMC’s and NTC’s have gotten out of hand, would it make sense to limit NMC/NTC per team?

Each team can have 2 NMC and 2 NTC, I think this would help a lot of teams.

Exactly. As usual people are choosing to blame anyone but the teams themselves for what is essentially a problem of poor management.

Who is blaming the players?

Ultimately the NHL is an entertainment product and the the players get compensated extremely well. It isn't unreasonable to think that the league could be a more entertaining product with the players having some concessions. Does thinking the salary cap was good for the league make someone anti-worker?

What I am trying to say, this is different type of work. Everything would have to be baked into the CBA.

The issue is that whenever a player with a NTC is going to be moved they always put the same small number of teams on their list. The limited options handcuff the trading team and the acquiring team is able to get the player for less. It is possible there is a danger of the league becoming essentially a two-tiered league with the big boys and the teams that are essentially farm teams. If a player is just the slightest bit unhappy he could force his way onto one of the big teams, the team he came from then gets a poor return making it more unlikely they are able to rebuild, making it more likely that other players force their way onto the big teams, the cycle repeats. A bunch of markets lose interest because they are perennially mediocre at best.


It is easy to say GMs should just not hand them out, but that isn't how the economic reality of the situation works. There are too many teams for any sort of collusion to be viable, someone is going to offer the player the best they can.

End of the day, Brady Tkachuk was leaving regardless of free agency or trade.
At least the sens got something decent for him to potentially draft another good player that ottawa will most likely again trade to continue the cycle.

Even with millions, they have kids in schools, spouses with their own lives/careers, etc. that they want to consider. And many take less money to play for good teams.

Yet in spite of that, I'm sure everyone has a "okay I'll play anywhere for that amount" price. So just pay them that and you don't have to worry about a NTC/NMC. Basically, no discounts.

Other than a bigger % of the pie, they'd want UFA by the start of their prime years, like say after 5 years in the NHL, so most guys will be making UFA type money by age 23-25, and maybe be able to go form superteams with their buddies like in the NBA.
