LIIGA 2024 2025

Regular season over with lots of surprises. Kärpät, considered to be one of the most serious medal contenders, misses the playoffs entirely in 13th place. And how it was clinched will stay in the memories for long time.

HIFK needed three points to get into top 4 so they pulled the goalie in the last minute. Kärpät goalie Damian Clara decided to go for an empty net, failed miserably and let HIFK score.

Tappara which has won three most recent titles had a very tough second half and was only 9th. Pelicans, who were silver medalists in past two seasons ended in 15th and have to play against Jukurit to avoid relegation games against Mestis champion.

Definitely an interesting season.

HIFK had their hot and cold phases but they made the top 4 in the end. K-Espoo did well and also Saipa was surprisingly good, just missing out the top 4 spot. KooKoo scored the most goals. Did anyone have Lukko being first?

Out of the players HIFK line of Vesalainen-Lehterä-Pakarinen scored on a ridiculous pace at one point. Of course they cooled down but Pakarinen still got 30 goals and shares the top goal scoring place (and the 30th goal was memorable). Atro Leppänen was first in scoring as a defenceman. I wonder if he gets any interest from the NHL.

Now on to the playoffs and to relegation.

Do you think Liiga will go back to 14 teams to match other leagues? Or will other leagues go to 16 teams?

If they go to 14 teams, I bet relegation stays.
 
There is an ongoing investigation into whether a closed shop league is legal.

The Finnish Players Association has been strongly in favour of relegation games.

I would expect some sort of relegation system to stay. I could accept even a current Swedish system where one team gets relegated and one promoted even when there is no games between them.

Speaking of relegation games, G3 of Jukurit vs Pelicans series was.. something. I'm not the oldest guy out there (31 years old) but i have never seen something like this before. Jukurit won that game 8-3 on the road, scoring all 8 goals on PP. 11 players was even in +/-, 7 players ended up with minus, and ofc not a single player was on plus lmao. On Pelicans 10 players ended up with +, 9 was even, nobody with minus. In a 8-3 loss lol

Based on the attendance numbers, it looks like LIIGA should reduce to 14 teams and the 2 bottom feeders should be dropped from Mestis.
