Shatty can do whatever. When teams box us out come post season the breakout passes and subsequent moving of his feet to open shooting/passing lanes for our boys to get the dirty rebounds is where he will be a factor. We ARE good to a degree at this already but we don't do a ton of damage at even strength this way. I complied the number of shots by the Caps D in the ECF and I think it was Orlov alone had more shots than everyone else on our defense combined when not including Hedman. There might've been one other player but it goes to show how we literally just attacked with 3 players

Shatty was bottom of my list as a PMD but he's good enough and probably our best shooter from distance on our team already except for Sergachev. Heddy misses the mark too much and McDonagh, Cernak and Coburn aren't super stellar shooters either

It's a lack of PP time that'll hurt him.

Less PP time would hurt any offensive minded player, but it's the underlying 5v5 stats that stand out to me. His relative corsi is much better than that of his teammates. His individual shots, goals, and scoring chances are that of a #2/#3 defenseman despite shoulder and knee issues and playing on one of the worst goal scoring teams in the league. What stands out the most however is that he was one of the best defensemen in the league at transitioning the puck up the ice. This is a classic case of a guy who needs talent around him to utilize his skill set.

What's more, I have not seen a convincing argument that he won't be receiving PP time. He is easily the best true RD point shot on the team and is a virtual lock for the second powerplay.

Any chance they’d switch to a 3F/2D PP with Hedman and Shatty behind 91-21-86?

Temporarily at least...

The idea right now is that he won't get much PP time or ES time in comparison to his other years. If he gets moved up the roster, sure, but like I was saying 25 seems reasonable, 30-35 depending if he moves into the top 4. 40+ only if he gets PP1 time.

IMO, as long as he gets the offensive zone starts, and he should, he's a lock for 40. If for some inexplicable reason they use Shattenkirk as a type of shutdown guy, is the only way I see him not hitting that.

The last five seasons he has missed 83 games, so I don't expect him to play the full season. Over those five seasons 97 of his 195 points have come on the PP, 21 of his 42 goals were on the PP. Sure we had a ridiculous top 3 scorers but we only had 15 guys with 20 or more points, the same amount as the Rangers. Hedman only had 28 ES points last year. How can you see Shattenkirk putting up ridiculous numbers if he isn't getting prime PP time?

I can't predict the freak injuries. Word is he's healed, if he gets hurt again that absolutely destroys my prediction. If he's healthy though, he's going to rake in secondary assists, he's one of the best puck movers in the game.

IDK if they'd risk tampering with their formula, they really like having a puck retriever behind the net. Having said that, it's almost too tantalizing not to try right? Having Shattenkirk at the point makes Stamkos virtually indefensible.

Our second unit doesn't see much time though, and doesn't have a whole lot of weapons.

Replacing Hedman with Shatty on the 1st powerplay should it least be explored. That make our unit even more dangerous IMO

Kuch having 3 right hand shots to feed. OMG

Shatty being able to feed Stamkos more easily.

If it works out, it could be glorious!

This is ridiculous. Our powerplay was the best the league has seen in years. Hedman struggled to make that pass to Stamkos in 2014, not anymore.

He's never really been exceptional at scoring 5v5 points. And our 2nd unit doesn't get the time or have the weapons to be a big contributor.

I think he'll put up 20-25 5v5 points, which will be excellent for his role.

Have the best PP in the league solely because of our PP1 unit. Puts up massive numbers and was 30% effective...CHANGE THE PP! IT DIDNT WORK!

I think we will just have to wait and see who is correct with this one.

We need to change our assignments in accordance to who is on the ice more. Shattenkirk is going to have to be double shifted in the playoffs so he can open scoring opportunities for the KGB line and what'll probably end up being Johnson with Stamkos and Palat -provided the latter is not playing like pure dog turds. McDonagh has tried and failed miserably both years with us, Hedman is not that good either and Sergachev isn't ready for regular playoff shifts nevermind double shifts. Toronto, Boston, Pittsburgh and even maybe a surprise team like the Devils is liable to be an opponent for us and those are the teams we can beat. But a NYI or Carolina and there's a 50/50 chance we're packing up again.

It makes me sick to say it but if we fail again it's going to be time to consider adopting the trap ourselves and we simply win series by special teams and suffocating the opposition with nothing more than clogging up the neutral zone

But of course we gotta make the playoffs first

You think Shattenkirk will hit 40+ points playing, what we are all assuming right now, <14 minutes a night, with maybe 1-1:30 PP TOI?

Personally think you are reaching more than we are. But tis is the nature of the forums. I would be ecstatic if you are right though and will happily eat crow.

What you say is semi true, but if you think Shattenkirk is better suited for double shifting than any of our other choices, you will be in for an unpleasant surprise.

Yup Im still nauseous have hated this guy since his Blues days. The best hope he is waived by 1 Nov.

It's not because I think he's better suited it's because I've watched Hedman and Coburn suck at doing this since 2015, McDonagh 2 years and don't trust Sergachev or Cernak for big boy minutes. I hate to say it but a we're gonna do is try again and pray it works. And it won't. Shatty at least adds and element we've lacked in the entirety of the Cooper era and that's someone who is a competent option at establishing a prolonged even strength cycle that sees shots go down the middle and not just the circles.

I've seen us fail too many times at this because I would never in my clearest of sane moments ever think Shatty is a best answer for anything. We have been attacking with 3 players at even strength for years and we need to stop

Shatty is gonna be a disappointment he is slow behind on plays much of the time and takes too many penalties because of it. Now if he is pissed enough that he gets back into shape and loses 15 pounds he could return to his younger days or a close ability. But I doubt it. When players are bought out there is a reason. He is gonna be another Matt Carle.

Pretty hard for him to be Carle. Hes not making even close to what Carle was making and he has nowhere close to the term. If hes another Carle we just waive or trade him for a bag of pucks. No big deal.

What I meant was his play not the salary hes another pylon like Carle and I expect he will be waived.

Worth a shot I guess. Ive seen mixed responses to it. We will see. If he doesnt work out its not the end of the world.
