Lightning coach Jon Cooper was one of the NHL coaches Wild coach John Hynes shadowed earlier this season while he was between jobs.
For Hynes, it was part of a self-evaluation and reboot after getting fired by Nashville. And to get to learn from Cooper, a two-time Cup champion coach, over a long weekend in October was extremely valuable. Hynes had pretty much full access — coaches’ meetings, practices, etc. — which allowed him to see how Cooper ran those sessions. And when he didn’t.
“He does a good job of delegating, deciding what he’ll take and what he’ll give to the assistants,” Hynes said. “Our jobs, it’s about time management, and that was one of the reasons for the visit, to see how coaches do different things. I learned what was important for him as a head coach, to have a hands-on approach, versus what he felt comfortable delegating.”
Cooper has known Hynes since coaching against him when Hynes was with the U.S. National Team Development Program.
“I’ve always had an admiration for Hynesy,” Cooper said. “I like the way his teams play. To be able to spend a weekend with him, you find out how other people do things. You can get in a rut yourself if you’re in the same spot for a long time. It’s always good to hear what another coach will do.”
Probably 100% a Coop call. He probably heard a bunch of good things in his books and brought him in instead of hiring internally.I wonder what prompted this hire, not a retread coach and not an internal replacement. They must have liked what they seen from the AHL club
Dan Hinote has been linked to the Lightning going back to at least the bubble cup.I wonder what prompted this hire, not a retread coach and not an internal replacement. They must have liked what they seen from the AHL club
The Hinote announcement happen probably minutes after the DeBoer news broke. It wasn't where anyone's focus was.Uhhh yeah. I didn't realize we hired Hinote when DeBoer was fired. Ohhh boy. Fingers crossed that Halpern can land the Stars job. This by itself isn't enough
SopranoWhat's his hockey nickname, hiney? Hiner? Notesy? Hino?
