Yes, a club could trade for Howard, but their offer would need to at minimum be equivalent to the compensation. IMO Howard doesn’t have that kind of value.

Correct... But if Tampa lets them speak to his Representatives before a trade to see if he's interested in signing with them, the lightning can maximize their trade value.

Tampa essentially made him lose 200k+ in guaranteed money that guys around his profile (NCAA first rounder, successful, eliminated with like 8 games possible to play).
I know people tend to ignore the money side of things but if you're telling me I missed out on 200k?? I'm pissed.

Do you have a source that indicates that this is what he wants? I saw the quote from BriseBois that said he values be able to choose, just wondering if there was something else that specifically mentioned him wanting to be closer to home.

What about ice time/roster spots? Not familiar with where he'd start with Tampa, if they want him in the AHL or were willing to give him a top 9 roster spot? A lot of these guys who go the college UFA route don't want to spend time in the AHL, so they'll go somewhere they can get an almost guaranteed roster spot. Or, at the very least, a much easier path to a roster spot.

I think that was part of it. He didn't want any part of Syracuse according to some reports down here. But if he's as good as advertised he wouldn't be in the AHL that long.
And with the way we lost in the first round he would have been perfect for the bottom 6 next year (potentially top 6) his youth and energy would bring an element we need.

So now that he's on his way out, is there any indication of what Tampa would want in a trade?
Personally, as a Minnesota fan, I would much rather just wait until next summer and try to sign him when his rights expire on August 15th, but that's realistically not how these things go. I don't want to make this trade, but I could see Guerin making an offer similar to Rossi for Howard+2nd/other prospect/bottom six roster player if you have one that's on the more physical side.
Not sure if Tampa would even want Rossi with their roster and cap situation, I don't know what that looks like well enough to say. But to me, that type of move is similar to what he did with Fiala for Faber and a 1st.

I believe the league grants the Lightning a conditional 2nd round pick for him signing elsewhere? At this point I'll just take that if that's what he's doing

I would give a 2nd that has better draft position and a 6th for him as a Penguins fan.

Well I assume any team he's traded to would be with the idea that he's willing to sign there, they'd probably let Howard know and talk to that team about it before a trade.
But yeah, otherwise if you wait until his rights expire next summer you'd get the 63rd overall pick, I believe in 2027.

First off we didn't have the cap space at the time. Then prior to our last 2 games with injuries we sent Atkinson down to Syracuse to open up space then JBB offered him a spot with an ELC burn and roster spot to play in our last 2 games. Maybe postseason.

As a player, thats not my problem. I'm a first round pick that just won the Hobey. Why are you not planning for a situation in which I am eligible to play for you?
All other teams with guys who are 1st round NCAA guys know this is the deal. You have to roll out the red carpet to get them in the organization. Especially for a guy who is literally 1 year away from taking all the leverage. So he loses 6 game checks and aren't prepared for him. Its a bad look.

He quit on the team that recruited him, now he's quitting on the team that drafted him. Amazing that some GM thinks he'll get a player who's committed to his org.

I'm okay with players not committing to teams who don't want to do right by the player. A player has an obligation to do his job in the role expected of him, but a team has an obligation to reciprocate when the player has done everything he can to that point.
Rossi is a great example of that close to home. Not saying Rossi is no longer committed to the Wild, but I'd understand if he isn't after much longer.

It had already been reported that he planned to go back to Michigan by that point. Maybe TB made a last-ditch effort to try to sign him after sending Atkinson down, but I'm not seeing any reporting on that, and they called up Geekie the next day.

Right and that to. Whatever happened, happened. Both parties tried and an agreement could not be made. Everyone can now move on.
And as far as Geekie, we needed him to fill in for Bjorkstrand.

It's just not that often that coaches don't put players in a position to succeed, whether that's college or the pros. Sure fans will complain at times but ultimately guys that hold grudges and lose games lose jobs. I wish Rossi would have had a better chance but we'll see.
I don't know exactly what happened with Howard and Sandelin but I do know that last night I saw Samberg, Pionk, Iafallo, Toninato and Faulk battling in Game 7 as NHL players. Howard thought he'd be better off in a different program, the one that produced AJ Thelen. Jon Cooper is certainly one of the best coaches in hockey -- it would be an honor to play for him, one would think. Howard thinks he'd be better off somewhere else.
These are young men, not cattle, but those are a couple of bright red flags for me. No college player has ever earned the right to spurn the orgs that spend valuable capital on them. I think it's a bad rule, especially given that they generally get RFA in two years and are paid pretty well to play the game.

It's been widely reported that the Brisebois planned to sign him and play him the last week of the season, effectively using up a year of his ELC. This firmly puts most Lightning fans on the side of the GM, sounds like Howard wanted assurances he'd make the team out of camp next season.
