GDT: Lightning @ Devils - 7:00 PM - MSG

I did too as soon as I heard that - I was like well a SHG to end it sounds about right.

Whether there’s a D or not really isn’t going to increase the likelihood of a SHG much at all on our 4v3. If Luke’s out there it’s not going to run like a traditional PP as they’d all be roaming around the same as what we had. Then if it’s Dougie his big ass is way too slow to prevent a shorty anyway.

More about the propensity to drift in too far thinking offense only

You should be thinking offense only on a 4 on 3 OT. Zero reason to be conservative and potentially settle for a shootout.

Getting a better net front guy out there was the right move. Taking any of the other forwards off would have been dumb and you aren't going to be any safer out there with Dougie's slow ass.

Jack Hughes in interviews looks like he can see evil creatures that we can’t but he knows if he tells us about them they’ll kill him

Well Luke would have been my D selection because he has the wheels to recover a fumble or someone getting a step on him at an angle. My point was having someone thinking not giving up the fumble like Jack did the other night because that's all I could picture when I heard 4 forwards - another Jack goof at the blue line and it's a breakaway.

Had a lot of good looks this game but we still didn't capitalize on em. Glad this team was able to close out a win.
In the first period, when Hughes has a partial breakaway and Bratt later has a full breakaway and neither hits the net (blocker side - Bratt hits the post but that’s no shot on goal, close is no cigar). Plus at least two 2 on 1’s that resulted in nothing or harmless attempts. I would love to see us be more efficient with our chances.

But great win. They’ve had our number for so long, I would have hated them to sweep us once again. And particularly when we hope to see them maybe in the playoffs. We gain confidence from this.

And is it 6 or even 7 straight at home now? That’s so important, we haven’t had much of a home ice advantage in years.

Huge win! I almost cried when Noesen scored :D Keefe is a great coach, I'm so grateful we have him. And what a game by Markström again. I wasn't too excited to acquire him because of his age, but he looks better than ever. Would still like the Devils to score more, but to me Tampa, regardless of their position in standings, is one of the absolute best teams in the world. They've looked way better and more dangerous than a lot of teams ahead of them, so a big big win for the Devils!

Absolutely this.

If Dougie was playing like it was his 2022-2023 season, I could see keeping him out there but his bomb of a shot has been surprisingly missing this season. And if you wanted some defense out there, I would go with Luke anyway.

Keefe saw that Tampa was playing up high on the PK and there was a great opportunity to get a net front presence on the ice in Noesen and it paid off perfectly.

He must've gotten lucky though, as I've been assured by many, many Maple Leaf fans on these boards that Keefe will in fact suck come playoff time and not make any adjustments.

Tampa went with Glendening, McDonagh, and Cernak. Even if they got the puck, who exactly is a threat to score?

The 4 forwards wasn’t really risky when you put in context the situation and who was on the ice for Tampa.

Also the way that the PK forward plays up high on the 3v4 power play is just totally different than how they play 4v5.

Do you not remember the legendary 2 goal Luke Glendening game against us last year? 😉

This wasn’t Markstrom’s best game statistically but he’s been playing so damn well and I feel way less anxiety with him in the crease than any goalie the last few seasons. Dude is a high danger save machine
If we had lost this game, I would have wanted to say “I’m tired of surviving just because of our goalie.” But that would be a lie.

I think Tampa is the best team in the East and I was also struck last night by how much our club and style of play right now seems to be modeled on them. There was little to choose between us last night - like us, they contest every shot, back check and try to get a stick on every shooter; and like us they feast off of turnovers, the counter attack and the rush.

They finish their chances better than we do right now, with Point and Kucherov, and their second line with Hagel and Paul has been poison for us too. Nico and Meier did a great job on their stars last night. Hedman is also having an Indian Summer, late career last hurrah type of season for them. He remains elite. McDonut has also proven to have such longevity. Nashville has collapsed without him and he's still bringing something quite special to their defense, go figure.

One other thing Tampa does well that we can imitate (and that we did in the 2d period last night) is to turn a game that's going against us around by pinning the opposition into their end and cycling the puck; which is what they did in the first period last night after Palat's goal. In our first game here when Hegel had the hat trick, they did that too - stood up at the blue line after we went ahead and forechecked and pinned us in until Hedman or Hegel tied the game and then the roof fell in on us. (I think it was Hegel after a quick turnover and centering pass from the corner?)

But unlike that game we learned last night. We are a different team than the one they beat in September. I loved our second period. When it was we who caught our breath and got better, took possession of the puck and turned the game around. We are the team that's growing. You can see us learning and trusting our system every game against them and if we meet them in an Eastern Conference Final we have every chance to beat them. I think we learned last night that we can beat them. For the first time in a while. We deserved to win that game.

Vasilevsky kept them in it in the second period. But I trust Markstrom to go toe to toe with him. Should be fun if it happens.
