OT: Let's talk about Movies and TV Shows, Part XXX (...how can this possibly go wrong)

I’m always hyped when a new Eggers movie is about to come out. The man knows how to set a mood.

Saw it. The visuals were cool. It was a neat movie with a really gloomy atmosphere. Not particularly scary but that doesn't matter. The original was a German Dracula ripoff and they stick with that here. It follows the classic story very closely with some changes.

Yeah looking forward to it. Has anyone seen The Return? Stars Ralph Feinnes as Odysseus upon his return to Ithaca after 20 years away. Gonna rent that one soon

So far the casting has left me cold. On Oppenheimer the draws for me were Robert Downey and Cillican Murphy. Now I see no names that intrigue me.

Apparently, there are more than 33 movies about The Odyssey. Not sure which are best but some of them are loosely based on the original, set in different eras and settings. I would prefer an adaptation closest to the original writings.

Checked to see how many series of The Odyssey were made and found these two:

• 1997 miniseries
  This two-part American miniseries aired on NBC and was directed by Andrei Konchalovsky. It stars Armand Assante, Greta Scacchi, Isabella Rossellini, and Vanessa Williams. The miniseries was filmed in Malta, Turkey, and other Mediterranean locations.
  
  
• 1968 miniseries
  This eight-episode European miniseries was broadcast on RAI, the Italian state TV. It was directed by Franco Rossi and stars Bekim Fehmiu as Odysseus and Irene Papas as Penelope.

I loved the 68 one as a kid. The Assante one is not bad but not great either. The Return is available to rent on Amazon now even though it just came out. In fact, I can't find a theatre in Chicago showing it

Letterman was great, his show turned me into a night owl.

Ah didn’t see him. I was looking for him. Yeah he was great. He looks like an asshole many times in some of those old interviews but he was still really funny.

Watched The Substance last night with Demi Moore. Really f*&ked up kind of flick. Thought it was original and really good, well until the ending. AWFUL ENDING not sure what they were thinking with that.

One of them, a French movie.

The other, an English language effort, is an 8-part TV series.

Both are visually stunning and have high production value. Acting is compelling.

I’ve watched the first and now I’m in the middle of the series and I am smitten.

What is particularly interesting to me are the variations in script, none of these nor their predecessor versions, ever follow the book to a tee, which opens the door to a lot of artistic interpretation. And the casting is always intriguing.

I’ve watched the first and now I’m in the middle of the series and I am smitten.

Man I have meant to watch the French one but I had no idea Sam Claflin was in another one, he's one of my favorite actors. I would cast him as Batman straight up.
