I remember watching this guy a lot back in his Vancouver Giant days and thinking around his second or 3rd NHL seasons that he will be a good bottom 6 guy but be out of the league in a couple of years for a newer younger version of himself and while he didn't catch fire with the Canes he was steady but his play since the 22-23 has been better than expected.

I know that he isn't lighting the world on fire and flies under the radar a bit but did anyone expect him to age this well when he was signed?

Was he a bit of a late bloomer, or just a guy who found a system that he fits really well in or what?

Underrated hockey IQ guy who just doesn’t have the skills to be a top 6 guy, he’s a leave it all on the ice player who never takes a shift off and he fits like a glove as Staal’s plus one on an incredible solid and consistent shutdown/forechecking third line. Incredible character as well and he’s one of those locker room glue guys that everyone loves so all of that considered it’s really no surprise to see he wears an A.

He’s had a few stretches with the Canes where he’s the best player on the team. Watched him live here in Colorado a few days ago when the Canes flew in late to play the same day and didn’t have the fuel to play the whole game. Martinook did. He’s clutch. He plays great in the playoffs. He just needs to be healthy.

Every team needs a guy like this. He has more skill than he gets credit for but it’s mostly all hustle.

One of the more underrated players in the league, or at least he was the last few years. Haven't been able to watch too many Canes games yet this season

He’s not a high skill guy, but he has enough skill to burn you if he’s left by himself. Tenacious forechecker, and he hits hard when he wants to. Pretty much a classic energy winger with a strong personality who keeps the pace high when others might be lagging.

If you expect him to actually contribute on the scoreboard, you’ll be frustrated. If you expect him not to contribute on the scoreboard, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

He has played a little on all 4 lines. If you haven't watched him play, he probably has the reputation of a 4th liner. 3rd line skill but 1st line heart. He plays absolutely balls to the wall, 100% effort, every game. He almost never makes defensive mistakes and is an excellent fit for our man-to-man defensive scheme. I've followed the Hurricanes since 2001. When Martinook retires he might be my favorite worker bee player to suit up for the sightless eye.

Met him once too. Nice guy.
