No, I'm not talking about fellow 2020 draftee Alexis Lafreniere, I'm talking about the guy picked 82 spots later who's been living in the shadow of the former for much of his career.
Alex Laferriere has taken a big step forward, and is off to a tremendous start to his sophomore season - he looks like he could be the steal of the loaded 2020 draft.
Impressive stat line to start: 9g 15p +10 40 SOG through the Kings first 17 games. He currently leads the Kings in goals and ES scoring. League wide, he's t-6th in 5v5 points, and only Kaprizov has more primary 5v5 points. And he's been doing it with Warren Foegele as his most common linemate.
He's not the flashiest guy, but he's a very smart offensive player with soft hands and a heavy release, who knows how to get to the scoring areas. His skating and all around game have come a long way since being drafted. He's also filled out into a strong 6'1 205lbs.
He currently leads 2020 draftees in goals and ES points, and is 2nd to only Stutzle in total points. He's due to cool off a fair amount, but his underlying numbers are still very good. With the right deployments/linemates, I could see him threatening 40 goals in his prime.
After being stuck in the shadow of Alexis Lafreniere for years, I think it's time we start giving this guy some of his own attention. If he keeps this up, it may one day be him casting the shadow.
