No, I'm not talking about fellow 2020 draftee Alexis Lafreniere, I'm talking about the guy picked 82 spots later who's been living in the shadow of the former for much of his career.

Alex Laferriere has taken a big step forward, and is off to a tremendous start to his sophomore season - he looks like he could be the steal of the loaded 2020 draft.

Impressive stat line to start: 9g 15p +10 40 SOG through the Kings first 17 games. He currently leads the Kings in goals and ES scoring. League wide, he's t-6th in 5v5 points, and only Kaprizov has more primary 5v5 points. And he's been doing it with Warren Foegele as his most common linemate.

He's not the flashiest guy, but he's a very smart offensive player with soft hands and a heavy release, who knows how to get to the scoring areas. His skating and all around game have come a long way since being drafted. He's also filled out into a strong 6'1 205lbs.

He currently leads 2020 draftees in goals and ES points, and is 2nd to only Stutzle in total points. He's due to cool off a fair amount, but his underlying numbers are still very good. With the right deployments/linemates, I could see him threatening 40 goals in his prime.

After being stuck in the shadow of Alexis Lafreniere for years, I think it's time we start giving this guy some of his own attention. If he keeps this up, it may one day be him casting the shadow.

He’s better than Alexis Lafreniere. That’s all I know

Imagine his numbers playing with Bread Man

Oofff
Think Lafreniere went from underrated to overrated based on what I was reading in his extension thread, will probably settle in at just "rated" at some point.

Everyone brings up the Powerplay time, but also ignore that for all Forwards with a minimum of 200 minutes of powerplay time 2020-21 through present (Lafreniere is at 398:09 so nearly double), he's 286th out of 297 qualifying forwards in terms of Powerplay Points per 60. He hasn't cracked the Rangers top powerplay because he hasn't earned it, not a big conspiracy to keep his overall point totals down.

I dont' know what else to say that you haven't said, haha. He's basically the perfect middle-six player who can probably play top lines in a pinch, but just isn't skilled enough to really permanently fill that role, nor really hard-nosed enough to be a Zach Hyman type role, but he's still developing so I'd love to be wrong. Ascended pretty rapidly....great brain for the game and very good tools, you could tell the pro grind burned him out a bit towards the end of last season and into the playoffs as it was basically twice as many games as he's ever played in a season + travel. He put in a good summer it seems so hopefully he can keep that up!

How many people do we figure drafted the wrong guy in fantasy, but ended up not regretting it much, if at all? Raise your hand! :towel:

Laferriere has been the Kings best player by a considerable margin this year. The forecheck, puck recoveries, defensive reads and stick work are more impressive than the numbers. He is just a consistently positive player learning how to find his timing.

This is going to be one hell of a player.

My mind breaks everytime I see his name, "Did they trade with the rangers and I just missed it"

The Kings are cornering the market on brown label players

Its just unfortunate the Jack Hughes they drafted is terrible and unlikely to make the show because it would be great to see them road tripping through New England with Alex Laferriere and Jack Hughes and Andre Lee

Imagine if both Elias Pettersson's and both Sebastian Aho's also played in the same area.

Btw, NYNJ is not New England.

I'm glad you made that clear since they both have difference names and we wouldn't have been able to figure that out.

I'm glad I could make you glad.

I think most probably would have figured it out, though don't I doubt that it may have confused you. Gotta tailor messaging to the lowest common denominator, right?

I must say, I don't hold WhiskeyYerTheDevils posts in as high of esteem as I used to ever since he changed his avatar.

Also, I clicked on this thread totally thinking it was about Lafreniere.
