Would that reinstill your confidence in team as a Cup contender and thus your confidence in them?

Is it not possible that some of us haven't lost confidence in these guys?

They've both been lackluster - Marner more so - but both have the capability of being top 10 players in the league.

I haven't been pleased with the play, and have been open about my disappointment in Marner's decision making this whole series, but I still have confidence that this team is an upper tier team and one of the 5-6 favourites to win.

One good game does not a Stanley Cup playoffs make.

That said, I'm fully expecting Matthews and Marner playing big roles in tonight's win. Matthews will light the lamp a couple of times, and Marner will have a multi-point night as well.

Final 4 or Bust is the minimum floor of expectations this season. So you can't reach that floor without a big win tonight.

Well to be fair the question didn't ask whether a great game would deem their playoffs a success, it simply asked whether it would reinstill any lost confidence in them or the teams chances to contend for this Cup.

I don't think tonight will change my opinion that this team overall isn't quite there in terms of competing with the very best (Colorado, Tampa, etc.)

The Habs at their very best and with Price in top form are arguably around the 10-12th best team in the league? Debatable of course, but I doubt anyone would say they are top-tier. Yet the Leafs, for whatever reason, let them get back into this series in a big way, and this after the Habs looked ready to pack for the cottage most of game 4.

If the Leafs get past Montreal, the Jets will be a stiff challenge. Toronto pulls any of this 'disappearing act when it's time to finish them' against Winnipeg, they'll be done. If they get to the final four and face a Carolina or Tampa Bay, and somehow shock everyone and get to a clinching game scenario only to take the foot off the pedal for a moment, they'll be done.

What will change my mind is if they (obviously) win tonight, then face the Jets, take over the series and if not finish them off the first chance they get, at least play like they want to.

Tough to say.

We're playing Montreal here, who without the COVID divisions is very likely not a playoff team.

So even if they have a good night, the struggles in this series, after the previous 4 years of going out in the first round, I don't think are wiped clean by one game.

Also I tuned in for like 15 minutes of the Colorado/Vegas game last night. We were NOT at that level. I think we have the players to theoretically play at that level, but I just havent seen it happen in the playoffs yet, let alone at any kind of sustained pace.

The team with its game 7 lines, no.

But once Tavares is back, yes.

It would show Marner and Matthews can actually kick things up a gear under pressure while Tavares has always been able to handle his matchups.

Just thinking about things being said in other threads.

Now, taking about what we hope these two do, calling out to the people who clearly remember 1993. Be honest, could you envision these two fakers doing what Gilmour did 21 times in 42 nights in that playoff run?

Here we are begging for one from these guys.

If they have a strong showing, I will certainly enjoy the rest of the playoffs.

It won't change my views on 34 and his contract and possible exit for the States. It won't change his stance on Kapaernick or trying to break into a car with a woman inside in the middle of the night.

I think the Leafs would be best to entertain a core shake up and he would absolutely be on my "taking calls" list.

Marner gets a lot of attention but he wouldn't be my first choice. JT can play well with him.

100%. That's all we're really looking for - show up when it matters most.

If they light it up tonight, all is forgiven.

For the record though, I'm not really disappointed in Matthews to begin with. Marner though, absolutely.
I’m in the same boat. And ditto the thoughts on marner vs Matthews. One has at least competed. The other one...

They still have mine, they are holding Generational Talent David Daharnais to 0-0-0.

Not much of a test there, since Desharnais hasn't been in the league since 2018. :wg:

Marner hasn't scored a goal in 17 games dating back to multiple playoff seasons which is similar to your boy Desharnais example in that respect. If that hasn't shaken your confidence in him then nothing will.

Now had you said Phillip Danault, you would have had me there as Leafs dynamic duo has kept Habs shutdown artist in check.

The poll results are pretty interesting and show how polarizing the duo have been from reg season to now: 21/31/24 votes for Yes/No/I'm not sure whether a massive game from both to win the series will reinstill much confidence in them and this team.

I voted I'm not sure, because the fan in me would love to ride that momentum, believe a small monkey leaped off their backs, and it would unlock the next level that's been missing to their game in the POs. But the brain in me would say fool me once... they've had multiple chances in this series alone to prove their critics wrong and every incentive to do so and have fallen flat.

If they have a big game tonight, I think it will go a long way for their confidence and the way they're perceived.

Jeez - no one give this guy the phone.
I'd take calls on all of them, but Matthews would require a big overpayment to get IMO

Marner's the easy and likely one to move. I'm not sure what ever seen a player traded after a Richard or leading the league in goals before
