I'm talking like 3 or 4 point nights in a 5-1 win type of performance. Would that reinstill your confidence in both this team making a deep Cup run and/or their own trajectory as key pieces of this franchises long term?

Obv no right or wrong answer, and I'm not asking to assign a probability of this happening but to pretend it does happen.

I had a dream Matty scored a hat trick...

It would reinstill some confidence for sure. If these guys don't get going (Marner and Matthews) we are useless. Even if we squeeze a win tonight on the back of spezza or kerfoot or something. Cold Marner and Matthews (or should i say, soft divas who can't exemplify playoff hockey with men) we're still useless against the jets.

They'll still be considered key pieces of this franchise in my eyes regardless of what happens today.

As for a Cup run -- going through Winnipeg, then two of likely Tampa/Boston/Colorado? I just don't see it.

Didn't show up in game 5. Didn't show up in game 6.

Why would I even expect them to show up in a game 7?

I won't believe in a deep run unless we win tonight and put the Jets away in 5 or something. Big nights from 16 and 34 would be nice for their individual reputations, but it takes more than one game to put a series (multiple in Marner's case) out of memory.

If these guys manage to win tonight I’ll become the most optimistic bright-eyed homer on the planet for this team. There’s no in between. Either they crush my soul or I’m a born again Leafs fan.

100%. That's all we're really looking for - show up when it matters most.

If they light it up tonight, all is forgiven.

For the record though, I'm not really disappointed in Matthews to begin with. Marner though, absolutely.

I try not to read too much into one game so killing it tonight would be one baby step, nothing more than that.

Bolded is key though, I have no worries about Matthews at all. Marner though, hard not to be really disappointed in him at this point.

So you just had to ignore the multiple requests to pretend and not quantify the % chances, instead of either playing along or not partaking? Dream a little, man.

Even if they scored a hat trick each, without Muzzin and Tavares I don't know how we'd fare against the leagues top teams. I'd certainly feel better but at the end of the day its a 6 game sample size vs 1 game sample size, plus injuries to key players.

Team isnt doing anything.

The fatigue and injuries will set in if they can even get to the 2nd round. Muzzin being out pretty much confirms they aint doing shit.

Probably going to take a bit more from me than a last ditch desperation effort to limp over an AHL level opponent, but it’ll definitely be better than if they shit the bed.

may not be the nicest analogy but......the drunk staying sober for one weekend is only a start.

I am. Games 5 and 6 were the worst Matthews has ever played in a Leafs uniform.

Ya I don't want to turn this into a player debate, we have hundreds of pages in their respective threads for that - but... I also don't understand the narrative in here that Matthews has been any better than Marner in the last few games. I could argue the opposite. While Marner has been awful, at least he's been noticeable and possessing the puck (albeit making dumb decisions). Matthews has been a ghost for the most part, imo.

Yep, it's actually really simple to figure out; if Marner is the primary shooter on a line, you're doing it wrong. And in the last few games, Matthews has been a step or two behind everyone, constantly out of position, coughing the puck up in ways I've never seen from him before, and only showing up to shoot at Price's logo. This means that Marner is now the primary shooter on the line, because Matthews isn't doing it...

I mean, the guy is leading the team in hits, leading the NHL in takeaways, is I think #2 in the NHL in expected goals, he's near the top of the league in blocked shots (as a forward who doesn't even play PK.. that's impressive IMO), he has almost twice as many shots as anyone on the team... and honestly he just looks dominant pretty much every shift. He's been a lot more committed to defense than he was in the regular season, and he's throwing his weight around. But frankly, I'm not sure what more we can ask from him, aside from shooting at more than 3%. He's hit the posts a few times through the series as well now.

I know the stat line isn't impressive, but tbh I think he's playing some of the best hockey of his career. I've loved watching him out there.

Sorry, but when I see Auston Matthews, with no one near him, attempt to pass the puck back to a defensemen, throw it next to the Leafs net and then allow the Montreal forechecker to skate around him and steal the puck he just dumped, leading to a 4 minute attack on the Leaf net, I have to ask what the hell is wrong with him. He doesn't usually play like that.

And I've lost count of the number of times Marner and Hyman have driven into the Montreal end, one of them (usually Marner) pulling up to look for Matthews as the trailer, only for him to be back in the neutral zone three steps behind the rush. That's not like him, either.

One good game does not a Stanley Cup playoffs make.

That said, I'm fully expecting Matthews and Marner playing big roles in tonight's win. Matthews will light the lamp a couple of times, and Marner will have a multi-point night as well.

Final 4 or Bust is the minimum floor of expectations this season. So you can't reach that floor without a big win tonight.

Stop posting this crap. It's a loser mentality not matter how long this team has disappointed you.

In six playoff games so far, Nylander has more goals than the first line combined.

Kerfoot has more points than Marner or Matthews.

Muzzin has more goals than Matthews, Marner and Hyman.

Spezza has more goals than the first line combined.

No, I have zero faith in them regardless of what they do tonight. Marner has been abysmal in the playoffs for years now, this isn't just some one off. He cares about hot dogging and trying to be the hero more than helping his team win games.

If the Leafs lose tonight, I'd love for management to move on from Marner. I mean that too.
