not a playoff team with shildt managing
I see a distinct difference between "playoff team" and "team that makes the playoffs"

The Blues have made the playoffs nearly every year that I've followed them, but those teams haven't always been competitive in the playoff games

Matheny and La Russa both have better winning% than Shildt when you only use their time in St. Louis.

However, keep in mind that Matheny inherited an excellent team that made it to the World Series in spite of him.
Yeah, it's by no means a high mark on Matheny. He's more or less like Shildt, he just inherited a better team, and once the problems started, he couldn't recover. La Russa was the only one that had to build something up, sustain it, and then be able to build back up after a dip.

I'm a pretty big baseball fan, so I can answer questions about the team or the sport if needed. I love to see someone give baseball a chance!

This year is kind of a transition year, so maybe not the best to make any judgements on the team (or sport). They have a lot of older guys (Wainwright, Arenado, Goldy, Molina) and a lot of younger guys (Carlson, Flaherty, O'Neill) and they're having a very up-and-down season.

The story has been injuries and pitching. Much of their rotation has been injured and/or ineffective, so they haven't had much consistency with the pitching. They can be quite wild, especially in the bullpen, and I think they're on pace for a historical number of walks and hit batters. They've issued walks with the bases loaded more times this season than I've ever seen, and that's usually pretty rare.

It's been frustrating to watch, but they're not totally out of it by the numbers. They have a chance at a spot in the playoffs if they can make a run here at the end.

Baseball is a very different pace compared to hockey, but it's still enjoyable to watch, especially an above average defensive team like the Cardinals
We're in transition year number 6.

its no surprise to see the white sox dominating that division now

this team desperately needs to give the manager position to Oquendo already and make McGee the hitting coach.

The White Sox have a lot of talent. I would hesitate before giving much praise to La Russa. He's a HoF manager, to be sure, but it sure helps to have the players that he's been given

It's nice seeing a Cards Pitcher put himself into a hole and be able to claw himself back out with minimal damage. Kinda like Woodford

I'm obviously a very spoiled Cards fan, but how absolutely awful is the rest of the league? The Cards essentially took three months off with injuries, terrible pitching, nonexistent offense etc. Just played horrendous baseball for half the season and they still are in the driver's seat for the second Wild Card. The hell are teams like the Padres, Reds, Phillies etc. doing? Definitely don't like our chances against Scherzer/Buehler in a 1 game playoff, but it IS just one game, and anything can happen, but still just making the Wild Card Game after such a lackluster season is just ridiculous. Hopefully they pull it off.

Honestly in a one game play-in situation, I’m very happy to bet on Waino winning any single game.

If it's one game, then you might as well toss a coin. The Cards could be absolutely destroyed or absolutely destroy whoever between San Fran and LA. It'll be exciting if it happens nonetheless.

AHHHHH, if Goldys double in the 8th would have gone a little further I would have caught it! So glad the Cards are finally clicking!!

if the cards make it, i think you want to play LA in WC game and SF in division round.

easier to take out LA in 1 game than to go against that rotation over a 5 game series

Just 2 more HRs until O'Neil gets to 30. This is a great run for them right now. Just make the WC and there's always a chance.

This run has been a lot of fun.
Absolutely. Arenado is finally seeing the ball. O'Neill is getting hot in September. I'm feeling the STL Cards Devil magic starting to flow. But, who's going to be inflicted this year? Carlson? Sosa? Noot?
