I have three friends who are respectively Flyers, Penguins, and Wild fans. All of them think Don Sweeney is a great GM and would be happy to have him. Only here do we hear the ridiculous stuff like "Donny Harvard" and all the weird class warfare bullshit aroud that, and even worse, the "Sweeney doesn't have the balls to do XYZ." It's embarrassing at times.

Every fan base shits on their management. Tale as old as time.

I agree with you on the credit/blame part, but you also don't get to be a GM in a tournament like this without having success and being highly respected. That was @BruinDust 's point.

There are a lot (majority?) of Boston fans and media who act like Sweeney is a dolt. The actual people who get paid to evaluate, manage and run the best hockey in the world think he's one of the best and brightest in the game.

I suspect posters here are in that majority.

Not a majority of Bruins fans, though.

Ah, that's fair.

I don't think he's a dolt. I think his time here has come and gone and the Bruins need fresh blood and fresh vision.

When Sweeney goes (because it's a matter of when, not if...all of these jobs are taken to later be lost), he won't be unemployed for long.
Well said. Fwiw, I didn't like Sweeney out of the gate. It was @LouJersey who changed my mind and said I was being too hard on him.

I've grown to respect him and the job he's done here. To me, the 8 good years has earned him a chance to fix this team. I want to see what he does next, what's the direction and vision.

Imo the only thing you can really lay at Sweeney's feet is the lack of impact center replacements especially since he was the guy apparently not on board trading Seguin in the room all those years ago. Everything else he's done well above average compared to other gms if you stack it up.

I'm sure I do it too, even though I am aware of it and try not to. My family are devout democrats and everyone I know in the hockey community are card carrying republicans and both sides think the other is a complete joke, offensive and "completely stupid."

I'm a lot more open minded on hockey than politics.

Was a time it was the opposite.

The big winner tonight was Bruins GM Don Sweeney who is also the GM of Team Canada. He decided to run with Jordan Binnington in goal and once again he won a championship at TD Garden.

Montreal and Boston were excellent hosts for this tournament and hockey fans were rewarded with excellent games.
The gm assembled the team that won. He didn’t select which goalie was being used.

2015 draft says hi.
10 years ago. Sweeney was gm for like a weekend before that draft. He didn’t build the scouting team for that draft. The 2015 draft he still came out with some key pieces. You need to get over it. When all the players drafted in 2015 retire will u get over it?

Sweeney is actually drafting fairly well considering they almost never draft in the first round. Even when they have drafted in the first round they haven’t sniffed a top 10 pick.

Even the bruins farm team is more competitive then a lot of the teams who rate higher in the prospects department.

Sweeney has done a great job over all. The entire hockey world clearly acknowledges it. Only Bruins fans hate him. I too would like some cups but I really can’t complain. He has iced a competitive team for most of his tenure.

I don't think that is true.
Well I live in Toronto. The fans here hate the management and most are ready to give up on one of their superstars at least. It’s a good thing for Toronto the management isn’t as dumb as the fan base. Imagine thinking giving up on either Mathew’s, Marner or nylander would magically make their team better?

Not saying Donny didn't put a good team together, but dam its Canada, Larry, Moe, and Curly could of did it. As far as going with Binnington, I would think that had more to do with Cooper and the Coaching staff.
Well this is the US and Guerin did a shitty job putting this team together.

I'm totally the other way now. Just want different people and different players

I'm sure there's a clever comparison to be made here but I don't have the mental capacity to do so.

We are really gonna give this guy credit for saying, "yeah, McDavid and Crosby should represent team Canada"

You dont need a scouting team to tell you that when you have 3 consecutive picks and a consensus Top 10 #1C prospect falls to you, you use one of the 3 picks on him

This past off-season, there was a main board thread where Sweeney was voted as a top 5 GM. I think perception of him outside of Boston is very favorable.

But the Bruins have let go of two coaches who could be argued for being in the top of their profession as well. At the end of the day, it's about results and revenue. If the results aren't positive and revenue suffers, Sweeney will be sent packing.

Really? Pretty sure the only management team that’s immune is the cup winning team every year and even that goodwill lasts for like 4 days.

I think it's a relatively new phenomenon. In all pro sports, not just hockey.

Growing up in Connecticut, there were a number of teams to follow. Discussions were mostly about players, and of course the coach or manager. Rarely about management, even in the media. In all the places that I've seen games live, there is no where I've been where fans were talking about management more than in and around Boston. Even when my son was playing hockey, I'd wear my Bruins hat to his games and someone would inevitably come up to me, say they are a fan, and then bitch and moan about Jacobs and Sinden. Cheap bastards. Like they could win the Cup every year if they only wanted to.
