Since Goton personally mentioned the Step trade as the start, I think we should all refer to that as the beginning.

Just nitpicking because it's still very early but that IS what Gorton said.

Ok so we could add Stepan and Raanta for Lias Andersson.

Didnt add minor trades like Peter Holland for the wrong Raddysh etc.

This thread was to focus on what we obtained for our core.

Surely this thread should have happened after this upcoming draft and everything has settled down into pure off-season mode.

Its hard to answer. This is not how you evaluate a rebuild. This is just personnel.
One also needs some time to see what Spooner for Strome is. Very quietly, I admit to having liking him more and more. And that was before the Caps game. Even if he can develop into a 2nd/3rd line tweener that can be an asset. Who knows? Maybe he has just looked decent or maybe this is something that Gorton looked into and liked what he saw. Sort of like DeAngelo. And sort of like (and IN NO WAY am I making this comparison, just the situation), the way that Smith saw and really liked what he saw in Graves.

Gorton has made some savvy moves. Maybe enough to offset something like the Zucc return.

Stepan should be included. Gorton can call it "on the fly" all he wants, but that's when the rebuild started.

And that was the best one. I wouldn't give DeAngelo back for Stepan straight up, excluding contracts.
Agree x 10 on that . I LOVE watching his lateral movement along the blueline with the puck....that kind of skill just creates space for our guys .

Cupboard is a lot better than it was. It's clear though that trading rentals is not going to land them the missing blue chip. Something is gonna have to give or this shaping up to be another 2012-2015 squad.

Shouldn't Kravstov be added to this since he was their 1st round pick last season? It was the Rangers pick but still part of the rebuild.

I definitely think Zibanejad, Lias and ADA should be viewed as part of the rebuild. They were acquired prior to the official announcement of the rebuilding, but it was already once the idea of retooling was mentioned and was obviously done with the view to the future.

Still not pleased about the Zucc return, but I cannot complain about the overall rebuild process so far. A lot of pieces in place for the future. The importance of the upcoming draft cannot be downplayed for this team.

It looks bleak to me at the moment. It hurts watching a very good team become very bad.

The cupboard was restocked, but we could easily blow this and be in limbo for a decade. I think that’s far more realistic than becoming a competitor with the pieces we currently have.

Agreed. Sort of the precursor to the “look at all these names” posts to justify that things are on the up and up.

Its really just too early to tell, but if I’m being honest, I would’ve liked to see a little more from the younger players on that list.

I could list the ingredients from a can of tomato soup and tell people it’s foreign prospects, and we won!

It’s kind of a weird thing right now. I think they’ve done fine, maybe even pretty good on the trade returns.

But I also struggle to see a scenario where they actual build a contender out of what has been assembled thus far outside of ridiculous lottery luck. They look set on a similar path where they have to go outside the org for top talent.

It’s not a quick process, I get it, but it looks a little more barren right now than I would have been hoping for.

I think that changes after June.

They need to not be stupid this summer though.

I think they did a great job trading at the top of the bell curve with a lot of their assets. The main thing is that I don't greatly miss anything that went out. I'd rather have what we have now then rewind on all these trades.

Stepan is a nice player but Zib and Hayes are better. Him at 3C is a waste.
Raanta not needed. I'd rather have Georgiev. The Rangers always do well finding serviceable goaltenders.

The McDonagh and Miller trade is a little closer but I still make that trade again in hindsight. The idea of McDonagh is a lot bigger than the reality of McDonagh. He started out with so much promise with many of us (myself included) thinking we had a Norris trophy contender on our hands but he's just not that guy.
Miller is a nice player but whatever. Not losing sleep over it.

Nash was an outright steal. Great example of using a GM's tendencies to maximize your return. Big ol' Canadian bull Nash garnered a lot more than he should have.

Grabner similar to Nash. He was largely a product of his environment here. Him and Zuccarello were two players I believed benefited largely from AV's coaching. Don't miss him.

They've made a lot of moves and I don't find myself missing any of the pieces that went out. That's pretty good.

I think a lot depends on what they do in the 2019 and 2020 drafts.

They have to come away with the higher end talent.
I agree. The problem is that the 2019 draft does not appear (at least currently) to be a particularly strong one. IMO, they need a top-7 pick and not whiff on it.

There is actually a good chance that they may be worse next year. No Hayes for whole year. No good Zucc's last month. Stall, Smith, Shattenkirk can further depreciate.....etc. The 2020 draft looks stronger than 2019. Maybe try to obtain more 2020 picks than 2019?

I think the first half of the first round in 2019 is strong, the second half is slightly above average, and then it becomes a game of extensive research beyond the first.

One of the many reasons, I am hoping that the rest of the deals, involve 2020 picks as opposed to 2019 or some sort of combination.
