Speculation: Letang: Is he traded and/or Does he chase?

Letang to me is just rolling the dice on ltir at this point. But maybe the new coaching staff will finally manage his minutes and make him useful.
Pretty much this. Hopefully the new coaching staff plays him minutes more suited to his current age and ability instead of playing him like he's still prime Letang.

I think a Letang getting 19-20 minutes per night can still be effective. Letang being played like a legitimate #1D getting 24+ minutes per night is a disaster.

Kuznetsov goal iirc.

-edit- Checked, nope. That one looked like he was going for a change and got burnt.

Definitely remember the one you're talking about though.
Not this one?

“I thought ‘Dumo’ was gapping up,” Letang said. “I thought ‘Ovi’ was stretching behind. I kept him to make sure he didn’t get the puck and it opened up the middle.”

Lol blames dumo too

I think despite how much some people around here hate him, he's also a good influence for young players.

He's got a stronger work ethic than Sid in some ways, he seems like he's a chill dude with his team mates based on POJ and Pickering's comments on him, and he's still an NHLer even if his game has eroded the most out of the big 3.

If he wants to go just like Sid, I'm fine with it, but I wouldn't like force him out.

Turns out there was multiple Kutznetsov goals Letang made a terrible play on. Huh, who'd have thought.

This is the one that popped into my mind as well.

Thanks, this is the one I was thinking of.

Did I miss some news since I last logged on?

He’s a guy that’s going to have to be forced to retire, whether it be by the team, his family or injuries. We just need to hope he can rebound under a new coach.

I can see him being traded but he needs the bounce back first.
Letang retire? 🤣
Just last week.

Letang must have been smoking something.

No Sid talk. No Geno talk. Please none.

Letang only… Defense can basically be traded in this league even if you had a corpse out there wearing a JOFA helmet you could still get a 6th because “he can move the puck with efficiency”.

Whether it be the organization that asks him or Letang asks I’m not concerned about the who asks… Does Letang get traded at this deadline in the upcoming season?
With no retention? I'm not convinced you can off-load his contract entirely at no penalty or without sweeteners. We're talking about a guy who will play 3rd pairing level hockey soon, at 6.1M x 3, signed until he's 41.
Not to mention his health history.

However, if it was possible, I'd make the trade without blinking. And I love Tanger too. We share a precise birthdate
But it's what's best for the team.

Nope, and there won't be an LTIR situation either. His recent surgery wasn't another event but was actually done to prevent any future event. Obviously not best for the team but it won't happen.

The time to trade him was when his value was through the roof around 2010 and his contract was ending. The team needs IMO were greater than keeping him at the time. Of course his solid play in 2016 and getting the back to backs kind of smooths this over.

Well obviously the best time to trade him would have been then, second best would have been coming off the back to backs, but I’m not even addressing value or return. I’m trying to game out say the team is a bottom ten team the week of the deadline. And a team comes offering a couple of trades. One with retention one without and it’s to a true contender. I wonder if Dubas approaches him and asks if he wants to go? Would he waive his NMC? Would Letang ask to be traded to a contender? These are the questions I’m asking.

If Sid was gone, I think the odds open up.

i don't think he's going to waive for FLA or whatever. I think he would only entertain MTL.

If you think he'll go to any ol contendee to "help" the pens rebuild... Then he wouldn't have re-signed the last deal here anyway, eh?

This. Players his age should not see those minutes.

Since he's supposedly a conditioning and training stud I could see him trying to play a year or two after this contract is up. Whether that's still in Pittsburgh or not is the question.

Big 3...sheesh...
Does Letang remember that we won a cup without him?
I'm sure we couldn't have done that if Sid/Geno had been out instead.

I have no issue with Letang, but we have a Big 2 not 3.

As far as getting traded, I doubt it:
a) we won't get enough for him. Getting a 2nd/3rd rounder doesn't really move the needle IMO.
b) the cap space he uses really doesn't move any needles either. He's still pretty decent, and just needs to play less minutes.

Kris Letang has been a Penguin for nearly 20 years and is the franchise record holder at pretty much everything for a defenseman.

He was a huge part of two cup wins and three finals runs.

Bizarre take.

I always hate the "we won in '17 without Letang" takes.

Yeah, we won. But we white-knuckled it almost the entire time with a patch work blue line held together with duct tape and chewed up bubble gum. We got absolutely caved in the finals and PDOd our little hearts out in order to win. The team in '16 (you know, with Letang) was worlds better.

We won in 2017 because we got Daley for basically free and he turned into a stud defenseman for us. White-knuckled defense about sums that run up.

The legend of Ron Hainsey screams into the ether at this comment

But seriously, the 2017 team was truly an all hands on deck situation. Forwards committed to defense and the actual defenders did their best with what limited talent they had. Murray held the fort when it got leaky (and it got wet plenty).
I can't single anyone out for heroics because everyone played their asses off. Even Phil Kessel was playing hard along the boards bc he knew the limitations of the defenders.

Maybe I got my years wrong. Hainsey was big for us too. But Daley basically revamped our defense on his own that one run.
