OT: Let’s Talk About Stocks, ETFs, Crypto — NO POLITICS (Part 4)

Thx for sharing.

Not at all familiar with the MetaTrader5 app. Is that for more advanced investors? I don’t get all the intricacies.

I’ve been sticking with basic user-friendly apps like WeathSimple and Questrade.

The following proponent differentiates between the two but since this video, he has updated content on Questrade, which I include below:

Updated Questrade content:

Essentially, he claims Questrade is better/ cheaper when buying US stocks while WealthSimple is great when buying Canadian stocks.

As an aside, this individual and others are saying that US dividend stocks should be purchased in an RRSP account in order to avoid the 15% US withholding tax. He and others are stating that the US withholding tax will apply if you buy your US dividend stocks in a TFSA or in a non-registered account.

FYI,

In Feb-Mar 2025 WS made a change for fx fees.

Likely they will continue to decrease even further in time also.

If converting $100,000 and you have a USD account already there is no conversion fee at all.

Over $25,000 and it's only 0.5%.

Not bad and much better than the blanket 1.5% they had previously.

Gold up over $20 so far today hitting newer highs at $3380.

This time last year it was under $2400

Bitcoin also up quite a bit today, almost $4000 and looking on the way up.

Probably too late to get into gold but might have jumped in if I knew what to target.

As for crypto, I heard from a friend who buys it regularly, that there is some that you buy and hold and some other that you flip for profit. I just don’t know enough about it.

Some crypto you can stake, which is similar to dividends. There was a lot of volume 2 weeks ago for bitcoin and now it’s going up with little volume which might indicate a trend.

Market back up with trump retracting tariffs from china (reducing). Do we think we’re out of the clear? I feel like nothing has really changed long term. Tesla earnings today sucked , stock went up . I’m going to sit on cash here

A great time to add some positions for a long term investor who didn’t jump in when the market was rising. As long as you don’t need the money and you’re not buying on margin, it’s a great time to target quality stocks and ETFs and hold.

Gold dipped $250 the last 2 days and there is good volume this morning with the price seemingly going back up. Let’s see if the trend continues with little volume this time, then it will be a good time to buy a little.

Any good CDN gold ETFs to look into?

Thanks for sharing this as I had no idea gold ETFs worked like that.
I guess I will stick with the gold ETF I have for now. The article doesn’t mention if the taxes affect the ETF if it’s being held in a RRSP.

Are you specifically looking at any ETFs, not just gold ETFs?

You’re welcome. Looking for good quality Canadian ETFs in particular, so as to avoid US processing fees and conversion costs (and US withholding taxes) which I could hold in a TFSA rather than an RRSP.

as I local joe working with RRSP's
what is a logical choice to look at
equity?
Canadian ?
usa?
minerals?
Here’s what one financial analyst is saying about investment in the current environment:

« Stay patient. Avoid emotional decisions. Focus on quality companies that can weather the storm. Keep cash ready - this volatility creates opportunities, but only for investors who don't panic. Discipline isn't optional - it's your edge. »

If you have time, I’d recommend watching vids from Professor G (« Investing simplified ») for a no nonsense approach. But, since Prof G caters to US investors, I’d complement with the Canadian in a t-shirt nerd who offers some great tips for Canadian investors. Both have a lot of content on YouTube.

There are others that were mentioned in the prior version of this thread.

Try a few investment books.

Also, you can find several content creators on Instagram. The idea is not to follow anyone blindly but to gather and process information and see how it’s adaptable to your situation, goals, risk tolerance, etc.
