Player Discussion Leo Carlsson

Some bad news Eklund had an injury which possibly worsened Carlssons potential linemates. However, Hallam openly hinted at wanting to play Carlsson with Raymond at the press conference, which is good.
So Verbeek and Yzerman get to their Swedes on the same line.

So is his nickname "the pope" now?

Well Fantilli had 31G, 54P this year. He's a good player.

He's a very different player than Leo. Like the pre draft stuff, remember how people said Leo was more consistently generating chances, while Fantilli had the more explosive moments instead? That's kind of how it still is.

30+ goals is always impressive at that age. And like Leo he really caught fire late. Although his splits are a little weird ... I mean, 9 goals in April, on 36% shooting, but only 1 assist? The last two months 14 goals and 4 assists. Maybe the tunnel vision criticism was warranted.

Maybe it's just his role, but aren't they wanting to develop him to be a C rather than a goal scoring winger? Not that anyone would complain if he were a 40-50 goal scorer at any position.

Lack of assists have been mostly on his line-mates not able to finish. Spending a good chunk of the season with Lundy and Leason will do that.

Was frustrated and said F this gonna score myself. But he is a playmaker first , but like with Getz , should shoot more because he does have a very good shot.

But he should have easily been over 50 points but Killorn and co not finishing his passes really hurt his numbers.

Oh I was talking about Fantilli with the lack of assists. To get only 4 assists in two months, but 14 goals, is not typical.

I had no strong opinion on draft day. And it is still very early. But it does seem thus far that Bedard and Fantilli play more like wingers than Leo does.

Maybe the biggest thing to work on though, those faceoffs..

Need a guru to come in and really bring up that part of his game. After a 42% in McTavish’s rookie season he is now going at least 50%. Need Leo to be up there as well

Yeah I think every indication is that the Ducks made the right call with the Leo selection with the goal being drafting a bona fide first line center. Fantilli and Bedard may stick with those roles but Leo plays the all around game better than they do. They're both closer to Michkov-like wingers than they are true first line centers.

That's not to say Leo will undoubtedly exceed their offensive production, but in the past few drafts, Leo is one of only a few guys including Celebrini who play a true 1C style of game. As far as I'm concerned, the Ducks made the right call in 2023.

I think all of Bedard, Michkov, Fantilli, Smith will be great players but I wouldn't trade Leo for any of them 1 for 1. Elite quality first line centers are so important and so hard to acquire. Leo has some work to do to reach that quality but he's the best chance we've got at one.

The WC is showing us that if Carlsson is on a line with more offensively talented forwards, then his scoring prowess goes up. Carlsson playing with Lundy at the WC is throttling down Carlsson's offense. Anaheim landing an actual RW1 this summer, instead of putting Killorn there, will boost Carlsson's as well as Cutter's offensive productions.
