I think the best solution is for the Rangers to add at least one other Lemieux like player.

NHL officials are good at picking out one player who is a pest out of a otherwise pretty non hard nosed roster, it seems like one guy is the trouble maker. Same officials are terrible at picking on multiple players from the same team who are playing that sort of game. Their game management system goes into overload and they just try to keep the penalty minutes about the same for both teams regardless if one team deserves a ton more than the other.

Eh you know he looked like he wanted it, the other guy wouldn't have thrown down had Lemieux not gestured as he had. I know Lemieux is a pest, but that was lame. I would have given him a penalty as well. Baiting someone into dropping their gloves then skating away is weak. If he keeps doing that stuff he's going to keep getting penalties.

Listening to Joe act incredulous about Lemieux getting penalized was also lame. Joe has been around long enough to know how that situation will be dealt with. No different than grabbing a guy around the neck from behind, and then another guy comes and gives you a couple shots. You're both gonna go even though what you did isn't really worthy of a penalty. It's the situation it creates. That's how they've always called it in the NHL.
Normally I’d agree that it’s a chicken shit move but his comedic timing was impeccable so I’ll let it pass

Everyone in the NHL knows what Lemy is. You don't drop the gloves first with a player like that. These are full grown men that get baited into his childish tricks. I say if you fall for that crap it is on you. Reacting to a player like Lemy is what he wants, smart players ignore him.

Grabbing a guy by the neck happens in literally every single post-whistle scrum every single game. So, like ten or more times each game. And it's fine until it ends up leading to retaliation. Is that screwed-up logic? Maybe? But it's how refs keep games in check. Stuff is allowed until it looks like it might lead to things getting out of hand.

They don't have different rules for Lemieux. They have different rules for guys like Lemieux, whose role is to stir **** up. Like that's a main part of his job, to instigate and cause **** to get nasty. Of course the referees have an interest in preventing that, so they will do what they need to do to stop it.

Name a pest, and we can go over how the rules were "different" for that guy.

"A pest" isn't Lemieux. Like, okay let's compare him to Marchand. Except Lemieux doesn't spear people in the groin, lick other players and all the actually dirty stuff Marchand does. He isn't throwing hits that are getting reviewed for headshots half a dozen times a year like a Tom Wilson does. Different players are different. The refs are out there watching what happens, they should be calling penalties based on what happens on the ice, not what they assume people's intentions are based on what "type of player" someone is. It's a lazy generalization that leads to garbage calls.

I have a bad feeling if/once the NHL allows sports betting and gambling for their games we will see things get even worse with officiating.

Guys who go out there with an intent to agitate are going to be officiated differently than other guys. You can come up with whatever comps you want, use whatever verbage you want, and call it unfair all you want, but that's how it is. If you're the straw stirring the drink, you're going to get called for stuff that others won't. This is in no way unique to Lemieux.

I never denied it was the reality, I'm saying it's unfair, absurd and lazy and something should be done about it.
