He’ll be a piece going back the other way when/if we make a deal with a seller to make the cap work.

It’ll be like the NBA. Having a pending UFA, who you have no use for, as a trade chip to match salaries can be a benefit when trying to make a trade.

Ully seems to prefer a lighter schedule. Only back-to-back this season was when Foresburg went down in warmups. If Leevi can keep his focus and keep his game playing ~1 or 2 games a week then this may be a match made in heaven.

I am pretty sure he was faking his injury out of fear that he might have to play more than 39 games, but now that he has another goalie we will hear that he magically recovered and is ready to come in hot and play another 5 games this season.

Unpopular opinion but you send him back when Ullmark returns and let him crush in the AHL and catch his breath after a job well done with the big club. If Ullmark goes down again, he will be ready. If Ullmark doesn't go down again, Forsberg will be fine for 1 game out of 5 for games 48-68 or so.

Bring him back up for the stretch so he can be around the team for games that matter and when it's easier and less risky to wash our hands of Forsberg.

This allows Levi the best of all worlds. He gets some time to relax and process things after a very good run but also continues to work a heavy load in the A instead of sitting while Ullmark plays the majority. It ensures we don't burst the bubble that we're witnessing but it brings him up to get a taste of the preparation and intensity that goes into meaningful late season hockey, while also getting a few games during that stretch.

The only exception to this is if Ullmark can't play 4 out of every 5 games when he returns until the end. If thats the case I prioritize the team over Levi's development.

This was a very pleasant surprise. Keep him around, and send Forsberg down to figure out his game. You do not want to make the same mistakes with Leevi as we did with so many other prospect goalies. Too many, to be honest.

Why would you want to get your star goalie, 2 years removed from winning a Vezina, back up to speed? In fact let's just waive Ullmark and hope someone pics him up...I mean we have the goalie of the future in hand.

In all seriousness. Merilainen has been very steady but the team has also played well in front of him, defensively.

The heater that Ullmark was on before the injury was at a different level in terms of impact.

Go compare Ullmark & Merilainen's high/mid danger save% and you will see very clearly who we want in nets.

I thought you could only clear about 1.1 mil out of a 1 way contract being sent down. I think there's a max and you can't just bury the whole cap hit.

That's what I mean, if he doesn't clear because another team picks him up, he goes on their books and we get the full 2.75 instead of 1.125 or whatever the max is.

Merilainen should be the starter through until the end of the season at this point unless there's a slip in his play or it's a back-to-back then get Forsberg or Ullmark in for a game (whoever is healthy).

Lets find out if we have a guy who can play 30-40 games next year and back up for Ullmark.

And then in the playoffs Ullmark starts.

Realistically as much as we've needed a proper backup there really isn't anyone available that could be doing a better job than Leevi is right now (fingers crossed).

Hopefully he can give Staios a chance to look in another direction for team improvements, at least for the rest of this year.
