Interesting blog from Pierre LeBrun.

http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/id/22226/firing-likely-not-surprising-to-lindy-ruff

Of note are the last 2 paragraphs:

If the Sabres miss the playoffs, I’m guessing owner Terry Pegula will also make a change at GM as well despite handing Regier an extension before the season.

Regier and Ruff have always talked about being a package deal. They’ve done some great work together in Buffalo. I’m not quite sure why they didn’t leave together.

I might believe it if it didn't come out of the NHL section of ESPN.

Dreger said just as much in his 5 minutes on NHL Network this evening.

What will be most interesting is what happens if this team doesn't respond to Rolston? What happens then?

Did they not just extend Darcy? Can't see them letting him go anywhere, he has done his job well enough IMO, drafted well, made a few darth-ian deals... The only huge blemish would be the Leino deal

Regier should be the most scared man in WNY.

The variables have been isolated. Ruff is gone.

If the players show energy with a new coach but achieve little in the standings, emphasis goes back to the players and away from the coach.

And Regier is the architect of this team.

He may well survive another non-playoff season, but his head rolls next when things don't take shape in the right way.

God I hope not,the team has major issues at center. When the hell will people wake up, our best center hasn't even been on the team for a full year.

Dreger and LeBrun are hardly in the know.

What?

Those 2 account for about 60% of all genuine breaking NHL news.

Add in Bob McKenzie and that is pretty much the sum total of legitimate NHL breaking news journalism in N. America.

Really? They're already likely not making the playoffs unless they tear it up hardcore.

Playoffs will NOT be the reason regier is kept or not kept this year.

Not really, they both report what other people say.

Dreger in particular is terrible.

Except the Sabres organization as a whole generally doesn't leak information pertaining to personnel decisions - Did either of them break the Ruff firing today prior to it beng announced? Nothing against PL, Dregs, or Bob it's just not information that woud be given to them by anyone who knows.

Are you suggesting averaging 1.4 points per game for all remaining games is a tall order?

:biglaugh:

Without that or better, we don't make the playoffs this year.

Considering that pro-rates out to a 115 point season, yeah, I'd say that's tearing it up hardcore.

That said, judging by current records 6 games over .500 should make it and that's only 1.322 points per game (or a 109 point 82 game season). But with this roster, I would still consider that tearing it up

Do your math again.

EDIT: I agree with your 1.32 point per game requirement.

My 1.4 is a tad high, though it prorates to a 96 point normal season, not a 115 point season.

Bottom line: we will need to do a lot of winning this season to make the playoffs.

Yuppers, Darcy still shows little to no ability to diagnose the teams issues. He will have to hope for lady luck herself to fix the problems or adios to him too. The firing of Ruff is certain to let him know he's next.

I noticed a number of twitter feeds sharing the same thoughts. I'm willing to give Regier ONE more chance. This was difficult for him but with the Ott, Hodgson and Grig/Girg moves/picks now this I believe he might be the best GM for us at the moment.

Better the devil you know?

I think if Regier's job depended upon a miraculous run to the playoffs this season, he would have hired a coach instead of appointing a temporary fill in.

Well, concerning the Sabres, who really is? Bucky? Harrington?

If anyone has a read to place faith in, it's McKenzie / Dreger / LeBrun - with Friedman close behind. All of them seem to be the most connected in terms of resources and research IMO.

He's just making a guess here though, doesn't have any inside information, just speculating like us HF posters do.
