Listened to CJ's podcast. He said Buffalo wants a similar young player in return for Cozens. They aren’t in a rush to move him. Whenever I see Cozens, it doesn't look like he has much of a future in Buffalo. You barely notice him during the games.

If I’m the Sabres, I’m doing everything I can do to get Rasmus Andersson. A solid top 4 RD is a massive need of theirs. They could move Byram, Cozens or both for the right package.
As a Flames fan I would be ok giving up Ras for Cozens and an add. But Conny likely won’t trade him. It will take either Ras or Weegs for Buffalo to give up Cozens. So it’s tough to see how this gets done.

And he’s a no show come playoff time. 😜. Oh wait. That’s all Sabres players

He hasn't been very noticeable this season, although he has had some good games. He just gets lost in the center, but maybe he could succeed on the wing, but for some reason Ruff doesn't want to try him there at all, continuing to play him in the center, which makes no sense. Cozens for such a young player sounds logical to me.

Sounds like the same problem the Habs have with Dach. If the Habs are in on Cozens, I bet you it's a Dach+ offer. I feel these two are close in age and similar potential moving forward but Habs would have to add a piece because Dach's numbers/development was derailed by injuries. Cozens has the edge over Dach from age 18-23. From 24+, I feel these two will be close.

I can see Gorton/Hughes offering something like this:
Dach and Mailloux
or
Dach and Flames 1st

Both teams try to get the player producing more in a new spot/new team, and this offer by the Habs gives the Sabres some cap space savings to go after other moves and a prospect/dart on top.

Or the Habs offer Beck and other parts. Beck is basically NHL ready but projects as a 3C. Doubt the Sabres are after that type of move though. Maybe Beck and Newhook and a pick? Not sure

Probably more of an offseason move. They are in playoff contention so trading Weegar (unlikely to move at all) or Andersson while all our RD prospects are still developing is counterproductive.

If July 1st comes along and Andersson prices himself too high for us and Buffalo drafts a top line center, I could see something around those 2 happening. Also a trade being post July 1st would allow any interested teams to actually negotiate an extension with Andersson
Flames fans need to let the Andersson to Buffalo idea die. He’s not going to let it happen.

Personally, I don't see Cozens having as much value as Sabres fans are pretending.

He's 24 and still a big ??

He has a big contract he's not playing up to par to, untill 2030..

He's been played mostly at center, but doesn't seems like he has the tools to be an effective NHL center.

I see a lot of Sabres fans looking down on Dach, when they compare him to Cozens, but both are not so far apart in terms of value.

At least Dach has an excuse for his poor development curve, he missed a full year last year.

And he's been showing hints of being quietly back in a confident state of mind, lately. Still a work in progress but at least it's going up, little by little...

Cozens haven't really missed playing time due to injury, but his development has stalled (too).

Cozens 2024-2025 : 26 pts/53 games (-17)
7,1 mil untill 2030

Dach 2024-2025 : 22 pts/54 games (-27)
3,28 mil untill 2026

I don't see a top 20 NHL pick/prospect like Mailloux in terms of value difference between the two...

Furthermore when you consider the differences in risk related to their respective contracts...

People look down on Dach because Dach hasn't even had the mild success Cozens managed AND he's always hurt. Then there are folks who generate material around the Habs who talk up Dach being "just as good" as any center on the Dallas Stars for example and it's easy to think that there is plenty of ammo to think less of him as a player due to the shine some are trying to put on him.

Cozens should be a RW. Trying to make him a center - and a scoring center at that - has eaten him up. The worst thing developmentally for him was coming out of the year-ending meetings with the team and both he and Granato talking about him becoming a 40-goal scorer instead of leaning into what he had done well to that point as a puck transition guy who was a volume shooter and good as a F1 taking the body. Since Granato only wanted rush offense and no physical contact, which aren't necessarily great developing well-rounded players, he had a terrible year under the yoke of the new contract.

There's also likely something to the Hathaway thing beyond just him getting his nose broken. Few guys on the team stand up for one another. He was one of the few and since then, I think that part of him is fractured. He is at odds with wanting to play that way and knowing most of the rest of his teammates are not going to have his or anyone else's back.

I'd be amazed if this trade happens. Conroy, a smart GM, won't pay what Buffalo wants for Cozens. Buffalo fans like to pretend he's a 1C but he isn't.

I'd take someone like Zegras over Dach, at least Cozens and Zegras have shown in the NHL that they can score 60+ points. Or some other deal, I think a few GMs might value Cozens for his tools and pedigree.

Show me who is pretending to be 1C? We are saying on the contrary that he would probably be better on the wing, that in the center he has not looked good for the second season in a row.

Conroy will pay exactly what Buffalo wants or Conroy no get Cozens. Buffalo isn’t shopping him, teams are showing interest, including Van. In Cozens case, it’s the sellers market, not the buyers.

And yet the rumor is the Flames are interested in Cozens.
Which is exactly why this trade won't happen. Most of Conroy's trades seem to appear out of nowhere.
Most likely this "rumor" is journalistic clickbate. Sabres don't need to make a trade and Cozens doesn't fill a hole in the Flames lineup. We'll putter along in our WC spot and you can lock down that last place in the Eastern Conference.

My issue with trading Cozens is that there are issues way above Cozens (Front office, Coaching).

There is zero risk for Buffalo keeping Cozens because of his age (will turn 24 in a few weeks), so the 1/3 buyout can be on the table NEXT summer still.

Sabres fans have seen a huge amounts of outbound talent that get better when they get to better built teams with better coaching and are used in the right roles.

The return on Cozens isn't going to be great (likely a similar struggling player).

They aren't making the playoffs.

The Sabres need to fix the front office and coaching issues before any major personnel decisions are made. Put Cozens in a position to succeed with quality NHL coaches and a front office that understands what kind of players he needs around him to thrive. And if it still fails, buy him out next summer for a pittance and be done with it.

Selling low on an asset with no risk attached to it long term is never a good idea. Especially in a lost season like this one.

It just seems like Adams is scared at this point. The Sabres have lost so many trades, they don’t want to lose another one.

And frankly, I don’t know how they take the next step anyways. They got all this young talent and they still aren’t close.

I have never said a trade would happen... we are talking about a rumor that has been reported. A report that states the Flames are interested.

You can try and flame (No pun intended) by throwing out inflammatory statements (for no reason) like enjoy the basement in the league while you are in a WC spot in an attempt to get some sort of negative reaction out of me but the fact is nobody is going to be harder on this organization than actual fans of the Sabres so ...your attempts are futile

My comment just reflects the fact that the Sabres always seem to be such difficult trade partners to work with. It's not like what they've been doing has been working so far. No flame intended.
