Not that I approve of how the Sens are running things, but that group of prospects has a lot of question marks. Who knows if Brown and White become top 6 players?

No one does, but for the first time in a long time we have a very large group of guys who appear ready to grab spots in the NHL. The proper move here was to lock up the core of vets, and sprinkle these guys into the lineup and see which ones excel. You could also use some of these assets in trades to try to bring in more proven guys (e.g. Yotes acquiring Galchenyuk type deals).

Do that and see what happens in the next 3-5 years. Unload your bad contracts and try to get value in trades/acquisitions wherever you can. If after that time the team is still in a middling position, then you tear it down properly with your core being on the wrong side of 30, and while you still have your first round pick.

Unfortunately for us we never get to see this play out. It would have been a very exciting time knowing EK/Duchene/Stone would be leading and mentoring these next group of young players, and that the team was getting younger while still keeping a solid and reliable core of vets on the right side of 30.

Saying something is coming down the pipe isn't really some sort of bold prediction. The status quo is obviously unsustainable.

Everyone knows that Melnyk will not have this team beyond Lebreton at the latest. He will sell then at a much higher valuation.

Actually, one possible caveat. Lebreton somehow causes a huge influx of fans to return to spending money on the team. If Melnyk is making money, he keeps the team.

I see only one real way a very rapid pressure point is reached:

#1. Something in the Lebreton process causes significant delay and/or additional costs to Melnyk.

The boycott will certainly make him uncomfortable in the interim, but as others have mentioned, the hits to gate revenue can be offset somewhat by shipping out salary, and he can sustain probably low double digit million losses for a couple of years if that development is guaranteed coming on line.
Don’t take this the wrong way. I do not need any vindication from anyone, especially from this grumpy board, but I had spilled the beans to a moderator a few months back about what is going on. The past few weeks it seems to be unraveling in the media. But. When it does come out, rest assured I have some backers here. We will all be on the same page for once as fans here.

Pretty much everyone here can agree on one thing, the Senators will be better off without the Current owner calling the shots ....... so even if it's a partial sale, and he becomes a minority owner, that too will be palatable to majority of posters in these forums, not all, but the majority.

The challenges of this market will remain, and whenever the move is made to Lebreton Flats, the franchise will be able to cope much better with the challenges that remain.

One prediction though, there will a poster or two that will profess that they helped the process of the eventual sale of this franchise, whenever that happens, by encouraging a boycott of whatever.

If Melnyk is a minority owner and fades into the background never to be heard from again, that's good enough for me.

Don't worry little buddy, we won't make you admit that you were 100% wrong about Melnyk never selling.

Please quote the post I made that I stated he's never selling.

When you can't, will you admit that you just make crap up?

You seem to forget he enjoys owning the team, and is not going to sell it.

Feb 4 2018 same thread

Who, in their right mind, would sell the Senators, and the rights to re-develop Lebreton Flats over the next two or three decades?

Put yourself in Melnyk's shoes, you own, and enjoy owning a NHL Franchise, have just signed and received the exclusive rights to redevelop probably thee most Prime chunk of Real estate in the entire country, with the potential to bring in huge profits to you, and your family, for the foreseeable future............ would you give this and your NHL franchise up?

So your advice is to sell "low"? That's not what billionaires do.

Besides, it's quite clear he has no intention of selling the Senators .......... whining and moaning about the fact he won't sell, is a waste of time, it won't change his mind.

I doubt very much that any potential buyer, would pony up dough today, for the supposed future value of the team/building in 4,5, 6 or even more years.

Let's just remember, there have not been any solid reports, of anyone, or any group, being interested in buying the Senators ......... sure there's lots of speculative unfounded rumours, but nothing solid.

Besides, who knows what the future value of the Senators/Arena might be in the future ....... do you think Melnyk would take the chance of possibly selling to low today, based on a guesstimated future value, that ends up being to low?

With nothing but extremely thin rumours floating around on message boards, the only thing we can take for sure, if Melnyk's word, that he has not intention of selling and that he's promised his daughter(s) Anne and Olivia, the right of first refusal.

Melnyk was asked about rumours about selling the Senators in December (NOT November) to which he replied, as he always has when asked, that he is NOT selling the Senators.

The sooner you come to grips with the reality of this situation, the sooner you can focus your energy into something that might make a difference.

Most of the time you tried to be clever and hide behind "Melnyk says", but you screwed up enough to once again make yourself look foolish.

And before you play the semantics game on the word never...

Clearly you stated not before Lebreton is built.

And with the references to turning the team over to his daughters, that qualifies as never.

If anyone is looking foolish, it's you trying to put words into someone's mouth, that they've never said.

Oh, and re-defining "never" that's classic.

If he sells or gives the team to his Daughter, as he's mentioned many times, he is no longer the owner.

There is only 6 spot in a top 6, you don’t really need Brown and White to become top-6 players, but of course it’s better than not, because you could end up trading them for a Karlsson :sarcasm:

We’ll have to wait and see what happens with Stone, Duchene and Dzingel. If Ottawa is interested in running a NHL franchise, they have to start retaining some of their current assets, because if not, you spend some years just to get back at the level you were.

If Stone, Duchene and Dzingel stay, then you need 3 more top-6

Tkachuk, Formenton, Chlapik, Batherson, Brown, White, Balcers, Norris... Need only 3 of them to succeed. There is also several other guys in the system that are still relatively unknown for now but who could breakout or come out of nowhere, a bit like Stone and Hoffman did in 2014

Ryan, Boedker, Tierney and Pageau buy you a bit of time while the younger guys cement themselves, not that Pageau and Tierney are old but they are ideally 3rd liners.

NCC in brief: Key meeting looms for LeBreton Flats development

Blair Crawford
Updated: September 18, 2018

The clock is ticking on the RendezVous LeBreton project as the National Capital Commission needs to make some important decisions on the landmark development, NCC chief executive officer Mark Kristmanson said Tuesday.
The development, which is backstopped by Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk and the Trinity group, includes a new arena, mixed residential buildings and other amenities. The prime piece of downtown real estate is owned by the federal government and managed by the NCC, which will have have the RendezVous LeBreton project on the agenda of its next board meeting.

“The meeting in November will be an important one for the RendezVous LeBreton project as we work through this month with the promoters to answer all the questions necessary for the board to make some key decisions for the winter and spring of 2019,” Kristmanson said.
“So far, all of our teams are meeting all of the milestone objectives,” Kristmanson told reporters after Tuesday’s meeting of the NCC board of directors. “They have a very strong vision and everybody is trying to support it.”
Among the pressing issues the commission faces are negotiations with the Algonquin First Nation upon whose traditional territory the development will be built as well as work required to decontaminate the once heavily industrialized area.
The NCC chose the RendezVous LeBreton team in April 2016 and continues to work on finalizing a master development agreement.
“All of these things are complex in and among themselves to keep the development on track, so November is an important milestone for many of these decisions,” Kristmanson said.
