People including the media are going to pretend last night was a good thing. But all I see is more of the same. A team who is supposed to be prioritizing defense giving up 15 high danger chances against and being bailed out by hot goaltending. And if we don't get it, people blame the goalie.

The way this team is playing right now they have a long way to go to be considered a contender.

A lot of other fan bases assume the media only talks about the Leafs all the time because they are thinking about the Leafs all the time. When the reality is they talk about them the same amount as other teams. The only thing the media does is will prioritize something if the Leafs do something for this reason as well. They know it's not just Leafs fans watching for Leafs news. It's funny when a majority of Leafs fans want Bowen calling the games on TV or prefer listening to the radio because every fanbase prefers a fan calling their games over someone who sounds like they hate the team and the Leafs are probably one of the few or only teams that doesn't have a homer calling every game.

yeah it's both the inferiority/insecurity thing. Often commentators tamp down their Leaf talk on the national broadcast, hell even local guys do, as not to appear pro-Leaf to the whiney Rest of Canada crowd. But the rest of Canada cries about "Pro-Leaf" commentators and have to be a full-on hater like Ryan Whitney, to be considered neutral

Nah, you never see me getting excited about the Leafs beating mediocre teams. Like any good team, I expect them to beat the bad teams, and they almost always do. But I don't like seeing them give up that many offensive chances against a bad team.

It's about beating a rival. The Habs being mediocre is irrelevant.

It's a old reference to an Ohio State football coach who called the University of Michigan "that team up north" (TTUN), which doesn't really work in the case of TTOE because "out east" in relation to Toronto usually means the Maritimes.
