it is baffling to me that we are somehow second in the east by points%

Man AM34 really needs to get healthy, what an opportunity we have with the conference appearing to be weak
We're 2nd because we play good, structured team defense. We are gritty. We are fairly tough. Keeps the opposition honest. We play a much more North/South game. We're not cheating. Forwards are supporting the D for the first time in about 5 years.

We're playing low-event hockey and it's suiting us very well. We're keeping the game very simple.

Um, you missed the most important thing. Good goaltending.

And they don't have Samsonov flopping or leaking straight shot goals every game. Elite level goaltending will make any defense look good.

Not sure if tonight was a good example of good structured team defense when they had a lot of turnovers and Islanders had a lot of chances in close.

I don't quite get why more people don't see this.

Absolutely. But that is a byproduct of everything else we are doing. There are nights when the goalies save us like every other team. But most nights, the goalies just have to focus on the initial save. We'll clean up the rest. Oh and we'll block a shit ton of them before they even get on net.

people keep saying this like the Leafs haven't been a good defensive team for most of Keefe's tenure. Last year we slipped a bit because our entire defensive core collapsed but it seems like that has clouded everyone's memory of what the previous years were like

The major difference is we have elite goaltending, it's no longer Campbell or Samsonov

At the very least, good goaltending and good structure reinforce one another. But really its goaltending which allows players to trust the structure. In any case, goaltending should be at the top of list of why the leafs are at the top of their division. I can count on one hand where Woll and Stolarz gave up a questionable goal this season so far. This years' leafs with last years' AHL Samsonov is not in a playoff spot.

We're actually keeping the game very simple for the defense and the goalie. And the forwards as well, truth be told. The days of Pierre Engvall circling back while on an odd man rush are gone it seems.

Unfortunately the official media saw it differently
Mcmann
Woll
Mayfield.

Woll with a .970 save percentage. Just another example of we can’t take the media seriously
The players gave the belt to Bobby over Woll.

Are you really unable to conceive of the idea tha someone knowledgeable about hockey might give first star to the only player who scored both the winning team's goals over the winning goalie?

Woll saved their asses. They owe him a nice dinner.

It's a win, but yikes, god damn they barely won both these games vs Islanders...

At least panthers lost so Leafs with 50 points lead the atlantic.

Horrible game, Woll won us that one.

We haven't looked good in two months.

We wonder why Murray and Hildeby don't look as good when they play the odd game... It's hard when you have Woll and Stolarz with elite level goaltending masking a lot.

It's nice to win these games I guess but it's hard to be overly excited.

A win is a win, but this team kinda stinks

What an obnoxious fanbase. A lot of teams would kill to suck enough to be leading the Atlantic without their franchise center and #1 goalie.

I don't care where we finish in the top 3 in our division. I like the style of game we are playing and it'll bode well for us come playoffs. This will be the hardest Leafs team to face in the playoffs during the big 4 era.

We're creating good habits. The cap is still screwed and there's no fixing it without us going backwards a lot, but this team will win more games in the playoffs than they have since Shanahan took the job.

What the hell does that have anything to do with what people commented about what happened in this game? Woll bought them time and had several difficult saves, this was by no means an impressive win against a bottom feeder.

Nothing said was dramatic. Just commenting on the game. When they play well, they'll get full marks.... But tonight was not it. If you only care about the W or L regardless of how they got there then power to you

'yikes'

Go look at the other scores.

This fanbase, or maybe just this board is so ridiculous.

First in the Atlantic, 6th in the league with the best player injured and when he played wasn't great...

And you still whine... Completely insane.
