He also wont be a first line guy, hes targeting a middle 6 spot which is the exact quality of players hes with right now

I disagree, I think you put him with Tavares and Nylander and it’s a decent line. They showed glimpses at the end of last year but just not enough time together. They need to give him some run way on an offensive line. 10-20 games in that setting and allow him time to figure it out. I just don’t see any other way.

SDA is a creative offensive player is the point. For whatever reason they are trying to force Robertson to be this third line/fourth line energy guy, it’s not his game. It’s like forcing a square peg in a round hole. Let him be an offensive guy.

SDA comes across as playing the kind of high IQ offensive game that could compliment guys higher up in the lineup. I see Roberson out there and I just see a lack of chemistry. His big draw is his goal scoring but he plays that buzzy forecheck game that’s often not effective. It’s like he’s auditioning for a bottom 6 role.

Some takeaways:

Aube-Kubel and Kerfoot were really, really bad. Robertson was ok but it's hard to gauge how well he played when his linemates were so off. I think he could have looked a lot more dangerous if anyone could actually give him the puck tonight.

Villeneuve made a few mistakes but I liked how he played. He generally makes good decisions with the puck and was far more poised than Kokkonen was.

Rielly and Brodie were meh. Rielly looked good in the offensive zone but wasn't good defensively by any means. He puts Brodie in tough spots way too often for my liking with some really bad shot selection and some brutal pinches.

Kokkonen was a complete disaster. I would send him to the Marlies' camp ASAP.

Samsonov looked excellent. Athletic but not nearly as scrambly as he has been so far in the NHL. He will do well if he can stay calm in the net like that. Petruzzelli just could not make a save on anything medium to high danger.

Jarnkrok's release was better than I was expecting and Matthews was very good. I could see Jarnkrok pot 15-20 goals if he gets some usage offensively.

Jarnkrok looked awesome tonight! I'm already a big fan of him and his game. I'd like to see him with Tavares and Nylander, and see how they do as a line.

Also, Matthews is going to be an unstoppable force this year. This was preseason and he looked to be on a mission every time he stepped onto the ice.

Not loving Benn as an NHL depth option . He needed to prove he is not slow and out of position, and he looked slow and out of position a lot. Kind of hard to block shots and hit people if you aren't capable of getting in the right positions, and it has been a problem for years now.

He may still have value as a Biega-like mentor for the Marlies, but that should have always been his placing on the depth chart and his game today did nothing to change that.

Mete did get beat in front of the net on the 3rd goal, but he was saving that pairing all night. He is good for where he should be on the depth chart with some upside for more, and should be able to fill-in for Liljegren while he is out, but a Benn-Mete bottom pairing for any prolonged period of time is not going to be good. We may need to look at the waiver wire or a PTO on another team for a guy to put with Mete unless Kral or Dahlstrom can step up. Even if we throw the guy on waivers once Sandin, Muzzin, or Liljegren come back... We only need a temporary fill-in so our 8/9 guys aren't our bottom pairing for a month anyways.

When the F would Rielly learn to slapshot? WHEN

I'm not even asking for a league average strength shot anymore, just something that consistently gets on net from the point and gives us a bounce off the pads to work with.

Every time he skates in and misses top corner we lose the zone because of it.

AK looked really out of sorts tonight. multiple bad reads bad penalty late in the game. I think he looks better on a line with players looking to crash and bang with robertson and kerfot he looked like the weak link alot. Robertson looks like he needs to play with a playmaker to make use of his skills. He can shot with time and has a good 1t but honestly if he's going to play in a third line role with checking players he needs more time. Could be the best thing for him. Looks like his shot just takes a little too much time to be effective on the rush. In space and on transition I think he looks a cut above the rest of the competition but on the wall and and as f1 he looks just like everyone else in the bottom six just smaller and less heavy
