Small correction. The NCAA free agents that the Leafs signed this year took $100K less than the maximum, (not the minimum), salary that they could take as entry level contracts. The lower salary will make them eligible to be an emergency recall.Just recently there was an article about players signing for $100k less than NHL minimum so that they can be recalled for emergency basis without counting against the Cap next year.
Is this the first time using this loophole?
The emergency recall rules have been in place for some time, but I believe it is the first time that the Leafs have signed free agents to a lesser amount so that they would be eligible.
By the way, it is not "a loophole", but an intentional part of the CBA.
