If anyone thinks Bernier was mediocre against Chicago, just stop watching hockey please.

Leafs got their ass handed to them...the only time they had the puck was when Chicago said: "We feel sorry for you, here take the puck and show me some tricks"

Bernier was .925SV DESPITE giving up 3 goals, he had a higher SV than Crawford who only gave up one goal. I am mean come on...that tells you all there is to know about the Leafs play.

While I agree that solely blaming him would be ridiculous, but one could argue that if he didn't give up 2 iffy goals then maybe things turn out differently. Of course it is hard for him when they were getting dominated from the start.

I feel we are due for a well played game from this group...however given the opposition i am in a dispute with my gut (aka feeling).

if he didn't give up the iffy goals we may have stole the game. we should have lost by more than we did.
Goalies rarely play perfect net, it's just their errors are so magnified. I'm sure every game almost every player makes 2 or three not so perfect maneuvers.

I never said Bernier was playing badly.

fact is Bernie's now going to have started 7 of the first 10gms, on pace for 57 starts this season.

so even here at the start of the year, in the first 10gms, it's pretty clear that #1 job is Bernier's to lose, and that it was never really an open competition.

Reimer's had four starts, and Bernier is getting his sixth tonight.

If Reimer didn't blow game 3, they'd probably be even.

It's early. They'll give Reimer a chance. Even if they are leaning towards Bernier for the long term, they surely want Reimer to establish himself as well.

A win tonight and they stay in the top 3 in the division, and show they can beat a top team. Big swing game.

For some reason, I feel like this is the first "big" game of the season.

Some combination of the fact that a 3gm losing streak would really suck, and that randy facing anaheim again means he should be pumped and his team should be pumped for him, and that the chicago game has to have been a bit of a wake up call. The fact that team canada brass has made it loudly public that they're watching this game tonight, and you have to know that Phaneuf, Lupul, and Bernier are definitely going to be feeling the pressure to impress....it might be their only chance to make a lasting positive impression on Yzerman, really. Also the fact that a win puts us right back in first place, while a loss drops us right down into the middle of the pack, ruining our good start already. Also the fact that the cavalry seems to be riding to the rescue this weekend (Clarkson and all the injured guys are back soon), so this is sort of the last game of the "start" of the season and it would be nice to finish it strong and on top.

I dunno. Feels like the first big game of the year to me. Losing this one would kinda hurt.

you're right, I screwed up the count. 6 starts for Bernie, 4 for Reimer. Good. makes me feel better.

a championship league for hockey would be incredible for the sport of hockey... would be really interesting to see how it would work out with the different sized ice rinks... facing the champs of the KHL would be pretty difficult on their pond

edit - re: sportsnet comments on NHL doing it

just tuned into sportsnet at the very end of the pregame. funny exchange, mirroring the discussion here:

Kypreos: "Bad goals are NOT the leafs problem here"

MacLean: "Except for the last two games"

heh.

If they can't show up and play really well in this game, we all should be really concerned.

this. IMO the leafs still haven't played a good game yet all year. VS the habs and flyers they played okay, but I'm still waiting for a great performance by the buds.

Reimer said he got sick on wknd. Said he could have played tonight: "I'm not dead, right? ... I just can't breathe."

Oh hey, Reimer has a cold. Probably not related though to him not getting the start tonight though .

Leafs really need this one, but it will not be easy as Ducks have won 7 straight. But hey they have to lose one sometime, so it might as well be tonight.
