This is where the so-called hockey media are guilty the most. The random crap they throw out there for clicks, and poor Dave from Drummondville takes it seriously. Next thing we know, Dave’s all over the internet spreading Garrioch’s nonsense. Before you know it, according to the internet, the Flyers turned down two 1sts and Cowan for a player who would likely crash and burn under the pressure of playing for the Leafs.
Risto is NOT on the Leafs radar and likely never was. If there were any conversations, they were likely very low level, and came from the Flyers trying to gauge Treliving’s interest, knowing the Leafs were in on Dmen like Carlo, and ready to part with Grade A assets. Can’t blame the Flyers for trying, if that was the case. He’s just NOT a great fit in TO.
The Leafs certainly weren’t scouting the Flyers like they were Boston, the Isles, and a couple of others. Carlo is/was a much better fit with the current Leafs roster, and if there’s one thing about Risto, he’s never adjusted well to the spotlight. He’s a very different player than he was in Buffalo (and even when first arriving in Philly) trying to live up to the expectations of a highly touted young dman. He’s turned into a really good player behind the scenes in Philadelphia. He’d fit well in a Detroit, a Colorado, or a Dallas. He’d likely fit even better, playing in a place like Tampa, Columbus, Florida or Anaheim. He’s one of the last Dmen though, you want in the media cesspools known as Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Edmonton or even Ottawa.
Like it or not rest of the NHL, but there’s a very real thought process a team like the Leafs has to take into account before trading for, or signing a core player. It’s one thing to sign someone like OEL, who’s been through the media grinder and reinvented himself, with little expectations. Risto would’ve never made it through that initial evaluation with the Leafs. It would’ve been a desperation move, and so far Treliving has shown he’s not going to be a desperate manager in Toronto. If he were, Marner would already have a $13-$14 million extension.
With Jensen in doubt, Garrioch is going to be Garrioch on steroids this summer. Throwing every name out there, who might be available on the backend, pretending the Sens are in on every single one of them. Playing fantasy GM every chance he gets. 90% of it will be complete fiction.
