James Mirtle "taking to some other teams around the league, there were lots of teams that, were like, nope. There were just so many teams that weren't interested at all".

Commenting on idea he had more value at the draft

It still boggles my mind how people are shocked by his valuation. Just watch him in the playoffs. What team that’s seriously looking to contend wants him? I look back to game 3 I believe. We had the momentum in that game and he gets hit behind the net, turns the puck over and Marchand buries for the game winner. It wasn’t even that hard of a forecheck.

Well the return could have been worse considering the circumstances but what a farce that Treliving and Berube think Benoit and Timmins are better. Like I really don't get how an NHL GM and coach can have that opinion.

What makes Liljegren better than either of those two?

That’s happening…. Now. Tanev better be taking his protein drinks because he might be looking at 25 minutes of ice time. Any injury to the top 4 is now a nightmare.

Tanev is playing the lowest minutes in his career since his rookie season. The way they have been managing Tanev has been perfect.

People see those January games against passive teams when he can skate up ice, when there is no hard forecheck, and he looks good. Makes nice passes, exits the zone, skates, shoots, you think, this guy is a top 4. Then he faces a team with a hard forecheck, takes away space and time, and his inability to process the game (which was all the talk with the Marlies, why he wasn't a staple up here earlier btw) becomes a glaring liability. He can't win board battles, can't clear the net, loses all poise with the puck. Think it was Johnston last year in the playoff who nailed it, he passed the puck like it was now someone else's problem. Zero composure, mentally and physically over matched. It was the final confirmation to move on from him. Some guys just don't have the mental fortitude, he sure seems like one of them.

Is that before he was the worst defenseman on the 2024 - 2025 Sharks?
I don't get who people think Benning is going to play over. Hakanpaa is available after tomorrow's game. That leaves us with:

Rielly-Tanev
OEL-McCabe
Benoit-Hakanpaa
Myers-Timmins
Rifai-Benning

He's an 8-10 guy. Depth option for injuries.

And Timmins and Benoit are better because???

I don’t think anyone is suggesting that Liljegren is top 4 on the current leafs D corps but he’s better than Myers, Benoit and Timmins.

If you want to see panic just watch Myers in a playoff game lol.

Really thought Tim was going to put it together this year on the Leafs blueline. He just never seemed to play with any intensity, he never looked like he gave a crap about anything, never in a hurry. I've said before that it's probably part of his laconic personality and he needed to change. Well he didn't and it's goodbye time.

All the best of luck Tim, it's in your hands.

As far as the new cat in town is concerned, I've got no idea what they'll do with that 3rd or 6th but maybe he'll get a game or two, maybe he'll suddenly turn into I dunno pick a semi competent 6/7/8 like fill in the blank

Picks up some picks and cap space.

Doesn't improve the team, but clears up some management issues.

Couldn't be trusted to play when it matter most. Problem I had with Lilly is he didn't excel or do anything really good, just average at everything.

This is the new regime though, they like their defense built a certain way. Majoirty of the D are big and strong to clear the net.

The 3rd is whichever between their's and Edmonton's that the lowest, and the 6th is a 6th.

I wanted it to work and it looked like it might at times but at least they got something for him and cleared money.

If you mean better as in bigger then sure. I’m not sure the math works that way though. The players salaries suggest otherwise.

The leafs coaching staff fell in love with Justin Holl too….. not exactly a glowing track record.

Good bye Lilly and all the best. Wished it worked out for both parties but it wasn't and I think this for the best!

Good return IMO and this helps us for now and as well a bit with prospect/pick so why not!
Maybe he gets a good run in SJ and somehow ends up back in TO. You just never know.

I hope he gets a real shot in SJ. I know everyone says he had a his chance here, so not sure.

But better him playing than sitting in the press box.

I have to agree here.

I love Lily, want to see him make Leafs brass look like fools. For real.

But if he's 1,2,3 option as press box backup at this point, it was right to move him for something.

Seems like a good "hockey trade" to me.
It wasn’t a hockey trade. It was just a salary dump to free up cap space for injured players to return.

I agree but now there’s less depth and the third pairing is ultra weak. Timmins and Benoit on the ice at the same time. Not exactly championship calibre D.
Timmins and Benoit is exactly the kind of 3rd pair of a championship caliber d pair have had. Vegas recently had guys like Hague, Hutton, Whitecloud and Pachal as the guys playing on their 3rd pair I believe. Florida had OEL, Kulikov and Mikkola. Colorado had guys like Erik and Jack Johnson and maybe Girard. I can't remember if he played much or if he was hurt at the time.

We have Hakanpaa who averaged 18 mins TOA on Dallas who is a pretty deep team on our 3rd pair soon. Got Benning now who has always been a pretty good 3rd pairing defender until he went to SJ and was forced to play top 4 minutes until this year. Myers is the only one you can say that's questionable but he's literally our 9th defencemen at this point.

This is just delusional. OEL and Kulikov are miles better than Timmins and Benoit. Haakanpaa probably won’t last 20 games with his bum knee. Benning will likely get buried in the minors. The only way the leafs contend this season is if they trade another first rounder for more D help at the deadline… like every other year.

No, it's delusional that you think having Hakanpaa, Benoit, Benning and Timmins as your 5th and 6th d man is not a good enough d core to compete for a cup. The main thing they need to do now to make the team better is find a legit 3C. People aren't trading 1st round picks for a 3rd pairing defender when their top 4 is already settled so you even saying they'll need to do that is also very delusional.
