Post-Game Talk: Leafs tie Season Series with Senators

I’m not sure the Leafs should always default to a one goal shutdown however. Game 2 and 3 showed us it’s a race to 3 goals but if they have the momentum in a game they should also have the freedom and sense to go for the jugular. We have been good. We have been unlucky. We’ve been lucky again. But gotta try to find the next gear next game.

I agree with what you're saying, but it's understandable.

This Leafs team has earned the mistrust of some fans (including me) and has turned optimistic fans into skeptics and skeptics into cynics.

But this series should be enjoyed and made the most of, and hopefully, more ill feelings get allayed.

and that's fair. and I'm not saying you can't be cynical or skeptical.
what i'm saying is right now this isn't the time nor place for it. go into the main series thread and voice your concern there, that's where debate is happening not in the after game thread when everyone is celebrating something that we've not accomplished in over 20 years.

shows how far behind we are when push comes to shove

I've been on the sens board reading their takes and a few of their posts were worth discussing here. For example, this one.

Is this what it was like losing 4-2 to a veteran-laden caps team in 2017 ? With all games going to overtime) but thinking we were actually "right there with them"? I was optimistic and happy to be there, but were the more realistic fans telling it like it really was?

Nah.

The Leafs have mostly been coasting. They score at will on the PP and it's taken them 4 minutes of OT to end 2 games.

As soon as the outcome of these games is even slightly up in the air the Leafs come down the ice and end it.
I think this guy pretty much sees this series for what it is.

In game 1 they were up 2-0 12 minutes in and 4-1 less than halfway through the game. In game 2 they went up 2-0 8 minutes into the game and went into coast mode. Tonight their top guys come out to start the 3rd period and totally overwhelm the Sens and get the 2-1 goal, after which they tried to coast again.

In the last 2 games they have basically limited the Senators to nothing in the 3rd period, but in both instances the first shot they concede ended up in their net. That's kind of bad luck. Once they get a lead they immediately try to lock it down and stop pressing for goals.

They've ended both overtimes without even breaking a sweat. When the game is in the balance they turn it on and it's not particularly close.

They are playing with their food.
... And he expands on this here as well

4th line did some good work in the ozone to kill time. I don't know the stats but didn't feel like they were a liability in the D zone either.
It didn't feel like they played much in their own zone... like you, no idea what the stats say.

I yelled STFU when the commentary was how Sens didn't have a goal until yada yada and they immediately tied it

Seriously HATE those announcers/play by play guys
Same here. It’s like they have nothing to talk about other than how Leafs shut down Sens for half a period, but they scored on their first shot.
Preparation for the game is minimal. They should provide info, statistics, funny comments, but they don’t even care to prepare and for po game no less.

Eh they’ve come within 1 shot of winning twice.

The Leafs can be better and will need to be to put the dagger in.

Matthews scoring and leading the offense for the win is a good start.

I see it this way; the leafs aren't playing their best hockey. But because of a great regular season final stretch they're playing an opponent that can't match up to even that. If they can ramp up on a run here look out.

I don't think they're playing poorly but I see more in them. I see hockey that wins it all.

When the Sens are ready to win, it is fans like that that will enjoy it the most.

Stolarz has let in 3+ a total of 5 times all year and only twice since early December, 3 is all we need

sens fans are treating OT like it's a literal coin flip.

It's like they didn't realize that they put 1 total shot on net through both overtimes and have barely even touched the puck

it's not like boston game 5 last year where coyle had a glorious chance and woll robbed him. We've completely taken away their ability to play hockey in the 3rd and OT and they can't see that

I mean, they did beat TB two years ago... ;)

Unless you mean 🧹ing⠀the Sens?

It would be a coin flip if we had Ullmark in net as well.
