Per the GM,

Winger Nick Robertson has one goal in 17 games this season, which makes you wonder where he fits long-term. But the Leafs GM sees positives in the 23-year-old’s game despite the offensive woes.

“You can say he’s struggling because there’s (no) production — the puck hasn’t gone in — but if his game was exactly the same as it was but a few more pucks had gone in, people would say Nick’s playing well. Nick has taken massive steps in his overall game — his checking game, his play away from the puck.

“What we’re talking to him about is, yeah, we want production, we want everybody to score, but make sure you’ve got a backup game so that if it’s not going in for a period of time, what else are you bringing? You still got to contribute. I’ve been impressed. He works like a dog.” (The Athletic)

I'm not saying he's safe, but if BT is impressed, it may be more than a 'window dressing' comment.

Definitely doesn't feel like a liljegren situation where they would just off-load him at his lowest value.

Feels like he's gripping the stick too tight. Two posts tonight. Doing the right things, but can't buy one.
Hopefully when he breaks the slump, the floodgates open.

Of his close to 14 TOI, he was on the ice for almost 12 of those minutes with Holmberg at C, or rookies/4th liners: Minten/Greb/Dewar/Lorentz. While I think Nick has improved his overall game, until Minten gains some experience and grabs the 3C position, Robertson is not going to thrive playing with those players.

Yeah, they really haven't been setting him up for success very well. Would like to see him away from Holmberg more.

He needs a better setup man at 3C.

Ideally for him he’s got a passing 3C and a 3RW who’s also a puck hound who will go to the net.

Still hoping he puts it together here.

Dude is long overdue to start getting some puck luck going his way.

My first car was an 82 Chevette.

Even after you turned it off and took the key out the engine would still sputter for a few minutes. I guess you could say it had a motor that just wouldn't quit. Too bad that was pretty much the only thing that worked well on it.

Kinda like Nick Robertson.

He's the human equivalent of the little engine that could. I-think-I-can I-think-I-can. Robertson's never give up attitude is an inspiration for us all.

Too bad it's looking more and more like he's the little engine that couldn't.

In Robertson's credit he's one of the harder working players on the team. But will without skill won't get you far in the NHL. A motor that won't quit is good in a demolition derby but it won't win you any races.

Just like the old Chevette.

Berube has given Robertson plenty of opportunity and has spoken very positively about his game from day 1. Robertson just hasn’t taken the opportunity and ran with it and there’s really nothing about his game that makes me think he’ll figure it out. With Minten and Grebenkin in the organization, Robertson is easily replaceable.

When I bought for $100 in 1992 it was already a piece of crap.

I'm not joking when I say the engine would sputter for five minutes after you walked away and went into the house.
lol! Mine lasted 5 years, I was commuting from Hamilton to Toronto back then, plus driving to muskoka almost every weekend in the summer. Put over 300,000 kms on it. Never did any maintenance the engine sounded like it had marbles rolling around it and I just scrapped it. Memories.

Well if the coach is happy with his play away from the puck then thats good.
Robbie is tryng hard but just a tad slow or as mentioned gripping the stick a bit too tight.

Domi is going thru the same thing but Im not sure his play away from the puck is any better than Robertson. I guess the growl gives him a pass?

I like the way the kids played and Lorentz is a beauty and should be resigned. He just loves it in TO and it shows.

Marner, Nylander and Mr T are all playing well to help us put goals on board but we still need more from our bottom 6

That being said....with all our injuries....Berube has the team playing well and disciplined and we are so lucky we have some goalies now

Back then it probably did have marbles, beer caps and beer bottles in the doors. Very common for that era equipment.

How many posts has Robertson hit this season?

What is everyone's opinion as to why it's not working for him this year? Flaws aside, he always found a way to get a few looks. This year, not so much.

Why is that? Just snake bitten? New coach's system? Gripping the stick too tightly?

Simply put: he's not as good as some think, but he's not as bad as he's currently playing.
