He probably gets this number or just slightly lower in arbitration.. hell maybe he gets a little more. They don't want to risk getting burned, and a 1 year deal walks him to UFA. This gives you cost certainty on July 1st rather than getting screwed in a few months with an unwanted arb award, and this buys the extra year if Liljegren has a break out.

Whether you want to believe it or not, this guy has shown flashes and is about to hit that age that d-men figure it out. New coach, new system, new partner.. lots of factors.

3m per for a guy who is scratched in the playoffs, has decision making issues since he was drafted. He is a 7th dman on a good team. Bad deal, I thought it was 3 million total. No clue how he deserved a raise or why he is needed on this team.

I like Lilly and think he has upside, but he's been inconsistent so far. Sometimes looks like a legit 2nd pairing guy, sometimes looks more like a #7 dman, hasn't been a guy you can rely on (yet). This does feel a bit rich for what he's provided so far, I would've expected more like $2-2.5 mil. I do think he has a decent shot to grow into this deal, but it's a slight overpay IMO.

We've seen Liljegren for 3 playoffs now and the one constant is him looking scared, making dumb plays because of it, and getting his TOI drastically reduced because he just doesn't belong out there in an intense playoff atmosphere.

Even if you're not trading one of the stars - not keeping this guy was a no brainer.

Sean Walker signed for $3.6M. Alex Carriere for $3.75. I know there are tax advantages but it still seems like either of these two guys were affordable. They must really think he is ready to break out.

Nice clearing tape-to-tape passes.

They had him out in the last minutes with their keeper out to try and tie-it up. Which they did and then immediately gave up the winning goal.

He was a top 6 NHL d man for sure. This isn’t something we didn’t already know though. I don’t feel like he has some sort of massive untapped potential though. He’s kinda soft and doesn’t have any glaring stand out features. I didn’t see anything which would have made me regret the trade. The value wasn’t anything special but moving on from 3 mil helps

Smaller sized D-men that aren’t physical need to bring something you can’t get else where i.e Spurgeon with speed and shut down ability or be a power play weapon like Adam Fox. I just don’t see him having anything in his toolbox that could unlock him into being elite on either end.

The guy’s 4 inches and 30 pounds heavier than Spurgeon, 2 and 20 on Fox. People talk about the guy like he’s Mete lol.

Spurgeon is smaller but Liljegren is still an under sized D-man.

If he can’t clear the net front or move players around with his physicality then he needs to excel in other areas at an above average level, and Lilly does not do anything at an elite level imo.

He might move the puck ok but he’s not a high end offensive player and he’s not a shutdown guy either.

He had a very good game against the Canucks. I watched the whole game and he played well. With confidence from his coach he will become a more consistent D man and reach a 2nd pair D man who is dependable.
