Confirmed with Link: Leafs sign D Simon Benoit (1 year, $775k)

Best 6th dman in the NHL. I absolutely love that the fancy stats community hate him.

"Fancy stats"

He just gets scored on a lot and adds no offense... it is counting, some people can't do it apparently and are scared of it.

He's not close to the best 6th D, and a random hit doesn't change that, sorry.

Great contract - love the guy

Yeah he's the sort of heart and soul guy this team has been in such dire need of for years.

If only we could get someone with that AND some real talent in one package. Hopefully Knies keeps improving and maybe he's the guy.

That is absolutely absurd, please tell me this isn't based on some bullshit fancy stats? Because anyone with a working pair of eyes would see otherwise

Why do you all hate counting? I don't understand why people call anything that isn't points fancy stats.

It is based on him not helping his team score much and getting scored on.

He is not helping his team win...

I thought Dom was some hugely respected voice amongst the stats community?

I don't follow specific stats guys and take their opinion as gospel, it is weird that you do.

Advanced stats can be skewed to agree with your point of view. This is proof of 2 different advance stats saying Benoit is good and bad. Advanced stats are not to be used the same way they are in baseball.

Goal % is not advanced stats... it is saying when he is on the ice, they lose more than they win, it is very simple.

Dude this guys Gamescores are literally posted in all our post game threads.

I disagree with many of these stats or the lack of context applied routinely.

Cool, I've posted 0 of those, Benoit is fine as a #6, but people go crazy over a player who hurts his team, not helps his team, when he is on the ice.

When you say win, what do you mean exactly?

Board battles. 50/50 pucks, what is it?

And isn't it the case that any team with their 3rd pairing, especially when they're getting about 60% dzs?

When he is on the ice, they are getting scored on more than scoring, that is how teams win/lose.

They don’t want to see the leafs have any success. Tears down every Treliving player. It’s such an odd stand they have.

Ironic, for someone named "notbias"

But to fair, I'm not the biggest Treliving guy either, but the utter simplification and lack of context is certainly a choice.
The difference between you and them
Is that you are not tearing down every single player. Throwing stat after stat to try and prove they are bad. What is the expectation of a 6th dman? Feels like they want Cale Makar level player.

i dont think hes been a revelation or anything but to suggest hes hurt the team as a 6th dman is absurd imo.

we literally might have been watching the sens play the panthers this round without his game 2 and 3 heroics in the first round.

hes a 6th dman..he makes mistakes, but he lays the body and doesnt take big risks and is an effective player, cant really ask for a better outcome given the expectations of him so far as a leaf.
