My room mate in University used to hype up Rob Pearson. "Supposed to be the new Cam Neely".
Was serviceable on the second line consisting of Wendel and Cullen, my 12 year old self can probably out skate him but he was pretty tough and popped in 20+ goals.

Brad Boyes and Brendan Bell were two others I thought would become long-term core pieces for the team.

Particularly the hometown boy Boyes. He screamed future captain who would do anything for the team to succeed.
I agree with Brad Boyes 100% as a player I also had in high regard as a Leafs prospect.

I freaked out when the Leafs dealt him for Owen Nolan, because of the potential long term potential and loss of Boyes. Toronto Maple Leafs acquired Owen Nolan from the San Jose Sharks. In return, the Leafs sent off Brad Boyes, Alyn McCauley, and a 2003 1st round pick.

After watching Brad Boyes win the Red Tilson award in back to back seasons in 2001 and 2002 for most outstanding OHL player, I thought the Leafs had a future impact player,

I've always been a prospect junkie and "play the kids" hoping for home grown talent drafted and developed talent to break through.

I never mentioned Boyes in my previous post because the 2nd part of the equation " became absolutely nothing" wouldn't qualify and Boyes went on to have a real good NHL career playing over 800 games and recording 505 points.

Fichaud is my choice as well and immediately came to mind.

I was super stoked knowing we had a 23-year old stud in Potvin and a recently drafted, highly touted 18-year old Fichaud. Thought the Leafs goaltending was going to be in great hands for two decades with that tandem.

Too bad it never materialized because Fichaud was abruptly traded. His career didn't amount to much when traded to the Islanders, and then cobbled a cup of coffee in a few other stops.

I was a little too young to understand that a 23 year old All-Star workhorse starter probably doesn't need an 18 year old heir apparent, but it was super cool to see this flashy Chicoutimi goalie carry his team at the Memorial Cup looking like a mini Potvin. Too bad we traded him for nothing special so quickly and too bad it didn't pan out for him at the NHL level.

Dan Hodgson, Norman Aubin, Ernie Godden, Ken Spangler, Steve Bancroft, Sean Haggerty. You would think be sheer volume they could have fluke a Nicholls or Ferraro. Early 80s were not kind.

Ernie Godden scored 87 goals in his draft year. Still the OHL single season record. But he was 5-8 and 160 lbs. He was like the 80s Nick Robertson. Which leads me to believe the outcome may be the same. Good AHL stats, cup of coffee in the show and then...poof. Gonzo. Hope I'm wrong.

Wow I don’t remember Boyes playing for us at all!! He seemed to have a Daniel Marios type of drop off with St. Louis.

He had a point per game in 2015. It should have been likely that he would improve his point totals, but did not. I guess he had already played top minutes and could not get that extra gear in his skills.

I thought for sure the Leafs found a diamond in the 7th round!
