Leafs Positive Safe Space

I'm not a Leaf fan. I take yearly pleasure from their meltdowns.

But, in all honesty...

Blowing up a team that finished top-4 in the league and had shown marked improvement because they lost in seven games to the defending Stanley Cup champs seems incredibly stupid. I understand (and enjoy) the history of failure and heartache but that shouldn't objectively taint fans and management's evaluation of a team that had an extremely good season.

There's only cup winner per year and it's always going require a large dose of luck and a good roll of the dice, but as they are they are starting with more dice than most teams in the league.
Thank you for offering an outside opinion.

But no, it's done. In fact, the rot is deeper than most want to admit.

It’s kinda like Leafs fans have a contest to see who is the most upset and can display their I told you so narrative.

The narratives are widely different, some have merit and others are wildly stupid.

I think the best thing - is that Bérubé has seen a full year now. He and Brad can work on bringing in a different mix of forwards.

We have a ton of cap space - there are a lot of ways to play this.

I didn't like the loss to FLA, but I don't see all the doom and gloom. They will be back next year. Their defence is too deep to not be at the top of the Atlantic again. Their goaltending will be fine. The coaching is good. The PP was good. This team will not come apart because Marner moves on.

Taking FLA to 7 games is ok and not a indictment.

Some positivity would be appreciated here.
Thank you so much for making this thread!

I agree it's not a doom and gloom scenario (yet). We were right they're and took the defending champs to 7. I think with a few tweaks we can go for a deep run. Swap out some of the bottom 6 and get Marner and Matthews a real LW to play with.

Yes I said and Marner. We need him back. After seeing him yell I can tell that finally, after 9 years of playoff experience, he gets it. Do what ever it takes to get the deal done. Hopefully we can get him resigned at $14MM with the savings we'll get on the JT deal. After that Run it back. I believe the 10th times a charm.

Grab Bennett in the Off-season

Bennet-Matthews-Marner
Knies-JT-Nylander

Profit

Hopefully we play Reilly and Carlo more minutes in the future as well! Reilly has been here since day one. He had a down year but he's really good at hockey and he'll bounce back. Need to make him and Carlo our number 1 pair going forward.

I love this team! I know they can do it. Just need a little tweaks here and there.

You know what, I will give a salute to all my fellow Toronto Maple Leafs fans out there who have stuck with this team in their own way all this time through this cruel and unusual journey whether we agree or disagree on all the big picture and little details.

Whether you're enjoying the hatorade or hopium springs eternal, we're spending evenings, weekends, free time, (work time!) listening, watching, writing, cheering, booing investing so much emotional energy and looking back on history and game planning out the future. And some of you are spending an irresponsible large fortune to support these guys, and good for you!

I notice all these figures in the game like John Cooper, Brad Marchand, Paul Maurice, Matthew Tkachuk. They like to come to this market and borrow the Toronto spotlight and comment about the fans and the media and all that, the pressure of the market and they like to disparage the fans and the media coverage. But deep down, I know they wish they had this passion behind them when they're having success. Go build your game wherever, it's never going to be like it is here.
I could not disagree more. The complacency and optimism shown by the fanbase is exactly why management has felt 0 pressure to do whats needed to be done.

Dubas is still primarily responsible for starting the coddling of this group by firing Babcock, but this fanbase lapped it up. Its been 9 years of sunshine and rainbows, "best Leafs team ever" type shit. Places like Philadelphia and Boston would've run these losers out of town years ago.

Leafs fans can’t shoot it top corner to win a game, Leafs fans can’t make that crucial save. Leafs fans can’t defend a player in a scrum when they’ve been hit hard. Leafs fans can’t make the lineup change. Leafs fans aren’t the ones taking calls on trades and negotiations. We’ve done all we could supporting this franchise and can hold our heads up high for the effort.

Safe space?!

lol. Maple Leaf fans have turned into daisies. No wonder we are doomed, bunch of woke dreamers.

Positive that I'm taking from this is that I've had and have a very blessed life. So much so that the biggest frustration and heartache that I've experienced this year is with a bunch of grown men firing a black rubber disc into a net. And when I say frustration and heartache, it's like a 3 out of 10. So I have a lot of gratitude for all of the other things are going well in life and that I get to watch them run it back next season in one form or another.

They cant. But they can call out the problems and voice their displeasure. Yet nobody's done that until now. Most fanbases aren't so delusionaly pro player the way this fan base has been.

Could've and should've easily run Matthews and Marner outta town when they actually had trade value. Instead people kept buying jerseys as the players kept getting overpaid

It sucks to lose, period, but the improvement in the team was clear. It just wasn’t enough to knock out the defending champs. My opinion isn’t likely a popular one, but we are trending in the right direction - I see a marked improvement over years past.

Florida was the favorite to win the series and every single game of the series. They dismantled TB and we gave them a good run. Wasn’t good enough to win but if you are improving, keep making changes to improve the team. Blowing it up is simply giving up.

Statistics are not an opinion. The data is in. You are wrong, stop living in denial. Also, anyone who uses the term "safe space" unironically is someone who I would not take the opinions of with a modicum of seriousness.
How old are you?

______

You have no idea what it used to be like as a fan of this team.

People got excited in the offseason about Komisarek, The Monster Gustafsson, Nikolas Hagman, etc. That's what we were facing each season.

Denial? That! Was! Denial! ^

Well they were slightly less shitty than last year, might as well run it back for a 10th time!!!

At this rate of progress, might lose the 2033 SCF in 5 games

It's probably because we have the biggest casual contingent of any NHL team.

At a glance it looks like we had some dynastic roster with Matthews/Marner/Tavares/Nylander/Rielly.

The truth/reality about them is extremely negative/bleak, normies cannot deal with negativity and bleakness, so they just give their NPC slogans about these things.

Someone who uses the term "safe space" is asking me how old I am? Lmaooo. You can't make this shit up. Yeah, those players were shit. Brian Burke was a shit GM whose best attempt at getting a 1C was signing Tim Connolly. Just because those players were shit and the ones we have now are better doesn't mean a thing at the end of the day. How many cups did Brian Burke's Leafs win? The exact same amount as Shanahan's.

And at least with Burke's teams, they were made up of middling players who were expected to do way too much, relative to their abilities. Honestly, I'd take that over a bunch of high end superstars who clearly have the ability and simply are disinterested in doing the job. Elevate your standards a little. People like you are why we have such a shit team. What incentive is there for management to make any meaningful change when people like you defend their actions (or inactions) at every turn?

Yeah. Hold old are you?

Also take it easy. You're working yourself into a lather.

I'm just a fan with a different opinion. I didn't lace up my skates and play they game last night.

How so? We won the division, and we took the defending champs to game 7. I also don't get the 'run it back comment'. There is only a handful of guys on this team from 3 years ago. Lots of changes over those 9 years. Seriously, what comprises 'not running it back'? Blowing it all up?

You're in the same division as the defending champs, you have to try to compete. There are many quality teams in the NHL fighting for a cup - we aren't favorite to win it every year. Leaf fans are some of the most entitled bitches ever.

Hope we learned you can only afford 1 number 1 at every position two 1rw don’t work and 2 1c don’t work bring Tavares bacc as the 2c but 3c at the trade deadline or don’t bring him either

Yup. Ill use an example ive noticed in Winnipeg. I've been a goalie for most of my life. Played at a level higher than most. Done a bunch of coaching.

Every playoff the casuals come out. And every year I tell people Hellebuyck is ass. But these people, who've never been inside a local rink, and couldnt name 5 other NHL teams, have the audacity to argue with me, because the talking dipshits on sportsnet said so.

The running back comment is in regards to keep any of the fraud 4. Matthews most importantly needs to be gone.

You have to get your own house in order before you get to worry about who youre in competition with. And this house hasn't been in order for 20 years.

Anyway, if you're looking for a safe space.
That's you're best bet.
