you call those defence men, they could not even play in the AHL. :)

DEFENCE IS WHAT KILLED OUR GOALIES.
look at the top teams , great defence

Beauch and gill were both go-to shurdown defensive dmen for cup winning teams. Komi was the go-to defensive dman for a good habs team. schenn was supposed to be the next great shutdown defenseman.

none of them made us a better defensive team.

why?

Niklas Kronwall, Brad Stuart, Jonathan Ericsson - DET

Barrett Jackman, Ian Cole, - STL

Phoenix has none, but they play Tippett style hockey which means the forwards do all the hitting and the d-men do all the shot blocking.

Kronwall is one of the better offensive dmen in the league. ericsson and cole are borderline nhlers.

So if the leafs traded gunnarsson for jackman, they'd have the defensive dman they need?

The worst move by Burke and Carlyle here is to rush Rielly into this mess of a D and ruin the kid's confidence. My biggest fear this year is we turn Rielly into Jim Benning 2.0.

As it stands we have a defence core comparable to Edmonton and Columbus, infact if Murray was healthy this season, we would be on par with only Edmonton.

If no moves are made to stop gap this D, we should be near the bottom of the league again in GA. Don't expect it to be pretty these 48 games or so.

Longterm the Leafs don't need D.

Longterm it's still Centres and Goaltending that we need. We're not exactly gonna be going on any Cinderella SC runs in the next few years, so why not spend our assets acquiring what we need longterm, instead of trying to target stop gaps who will be replaced by some combination of Rielly, Percy, Finn, Blacker, Holzer, etc over the next few years.

Ranger/Kostka IMO can be our shortterm solutions. And depending on how well they play, one of them might be able to carve themselves a longterm position on the blueline.

We definitely don't need long term dmen with Rielley,Percy,Finn on the horizon. I wouldn't mind adding one short term guy but Kostka and Ranger have been awesome for the Marlies and can fill in. imo.

ok lets pretend we cant get franson signed or ranger which i beleive is the premise of the OP which Free agent Dmen are available that are A) willing to sign a 1 year or 2 year deal b) an upgrade on holzer or kostka

Colin White
Kurtis Foster
Matt Hunwick

idk if those guys are a huge upgrade what do others think?

Hasn't Ranger been out of the NHL for a few years and was playing in some beer league in Oshawa?

And now you guys want to plug him into the Leafs lineup in the NHL? lmao

He single handedly carried our team to the Molson Canadian cup.

:)

I'm pretty sure he just coached hockey in Whitby, while he was abandoning the NHL. Good on him for being in AHL shape though, guy clearly can play.

You do realize that he's been one of the Marlies best players for the first half of the season, don't you?
