Post-Game Talk: Leafs lose to Minnesota and end January with a whimper

Which is funny because last year 6 on 5 they were almost automatic scoring one
Confidence probably plays into it. Remember the PP was good for the first 2/3 of last season too. So that prob carried over. I mean right now, they look like they don't even want to be on the man advantage most of the time.

For sure it is a confidence thing.

I think the new daddy thing has to be passed by now. So, what is it then? The Leafs do play a different style in their own zone. The D are positioned differently than they were under Keefe (lower, closer to the net). Have to wonder if he is still thinking too much about where he is supposed to be rather than just playing?

It's clearly a mental thing based on what I see. And no guarantee he works out of it this season.

The lack of confidence card is a weak one though. He’s a 12 year pro, go figure it out or commit to simplifying your game and back to basics to buy time and just be quietly reliable. He’s the opposite.

Marner was pretty gutless on a lot of the rushes today. Full speed into the zone, voluntary stop up after burners and curls back to the blueline, soft play to nowhere, then back down to the defensive zone again.
Was funny in a not funny way to see OEL try to make a blueline dman to dman pass but it hit marners skate on the way over. What're you doing up here bud?

He’s the longest tenured player with the worst quality control over his own play, looks mentally out of every play and completely out of shape, physically unable to compete.
Agree. It's nasty to look at Dion, I mean Jake, I mean Morgan out there. There is no jokes in all honesty. They guy needs a talking to.

For sure it is a confidence thing.

It's bad whatever it is, its really bad. Physical as well. He looks really out of shape.

It was a combined losing effort from Rielly's trash coverage, Woll asleep at the wheel and the rest of the team led by Captain Matthews dead on arrival. Only signs of life offensively were Robertson buzzing, McMann looking okay on the big line and Willie Nylander. Everything else is just rotten.
It's been rotten since they lost to Habs and Jackets in the first round.

At one time I would agree with you, but have learned that the mentality of us humans is complex. Could be external factors too... The number of years pro do not matter I don't think in this case. I am sure he is trying to work through it. Unfortunate it is not working.

this team was always going to make the playoffs lol, that shouldn't be the standard

once they get there, they are going to be 7 and done yet again, maybe less.

The team hasn't been good enough in the RS, i don't even want to know how bad they'll be in the playoffs
I don’t think there are many teams they can beat in a 7 game series so positioning isnt too important.

I thought this one would go to OT, but on to the next. I think the injuries are probably getting to them at this point. They don't have guys who can replace Tavares and Knies in the lineup, but I'm not sure any team does.

What if they don't? Hoooboy what an offseason that would be. I'd almost welcome it over another first round loss as maybe someone will get their head out of their asses and make some significant changes.

Don't get me wrong, I'll be living and spewing nonsense on here, but... could it be for the best? A bit of a wakeup call for the arrogant core?
I'd like it if we had draft picks to do some damage but that is not happening for the next 3 years. That's why I would let them stew in the smell of their failure. Hope they come begging to be let out of their NMC especially captain fantastic.

Team was overachieving with good goaltending for awhile there. Bound for a slump.

Looks like they’re just coasting to this 4 nations break. Hopefully that can get them healthy and recharged for a run.

Wasting the best chance they have to win the Atlantic in the Matthews era though

I dont think Marner and Matthews playing on the same line is an issue.

Having said that, why are they still on a line together after multiple games where we only scored 1 goal/game?

Why the hell are we not mixing things up to try and get some guys going?

Put Domi with Matthews, Marner with Robertson or Pacioretty. Even if it's just for a few games.
It is when Holmberg and Domi are on the second line

I’m sorry but I want Sheldon Keefe again!
I mean, many of us knew the coach was never the problem, right?

Not that Keefe was going to do anything different. IMO, unless we brought in Quennville (and I get why people are against that), I think it was always going to end the same way.

It's the core boys, it's always been the core!

Replace Toretto with Core and I think we are done here.
