This team not even in the same stratosphere as the Av’s. Felt like we were short handed most of the night.
Stolarz held the fort as long as he could. Once they got to him, it was game over. Regular season games but being outclassed by two of the top 5 best teams in the league back to back does not give me confidence that we are not in for another first round exit.

I agree that the Leafs were outplayed, but I didn't think that Stolarz played well, he allowed two soft goals take away that they don't pull the goalie and allow 2 empty netters and win the game 4-3.

Stolarz looked smaller than usual tonight. That MacKinnon goal he had quite a bit of net there to see.

I am not a fan over Stolarz over sliding to one side. This seems like a recent thing and it cost them against SanJose.

What happened to our goalies?

He may or may not have allowed soft goals but the Leafs winning after 2 was only because of Stolarz. The guy can only do so much and is the main reason this team isn’t in 9th place in the conference.

This Marner stuff got tedious a while ago. At the end of the day, the leafs will give him more money than any other team. I still think that will be the deciding factor. The leafs will cave and give him what he wants.
You're sounding less and less confident everyday with this my man.

This could be the time you find out how good this team really is. At some point all great goaltending dries up for a period of time and you see the warts this team has.

I’ve noticed the same thing. Woll does it quite often as well. Both goalies are good when they’re quiet between the pipes. This sliding beyond the posts is counterproductive and is a recent trend for Stolarz. He wasn’t doing this earlier in the season. Is someone coaching them to do this?

It's not there talent wise either. They lack #1 D and D depth as a whole until this year, depth is weak ever since the goofs signed these awful contracts, and ZERO leadership at any levels. They have a couple of skilled players, that's it.

In some ways, this team makes me love the sport more. Because operations like this always come up short and embarrass themselves as it always should in hockey. It's like karma.

It used to be the Leafs doing it to the Senators, then in a SICK twist of fate they made a fanboy of those Senators the GM. The rest is history. :help:
I disagree, they have the talent, but the talent doesn't perform.

The Oilers outside of McDrai have always been bad, they've gone on deep runs because those guys perform.

Matthews is literally going to either be the fifth or sixth fastest goal scorer to 400 in NHL history, that alone should get you deep runs. Among active players in the playoffs he is 23rd in g/60 and if you include players with 20+ games where variance can happen he is 28th. In goals/game in playoffs he ranks 55th all time.

To put that in perspective, his goals/game ranks 5th all time in season and he is number 1 g/60 (not tracked when Mario/Bossy/Gretzky were in the league, but still). Just horrendous horrendous result really. The fact that 8 different goalies/8 different defenses have shut down a historic goal scorer says it all. Mitch and JT have a big dropoff come playoff time too, Willie is the only one that is only slightly worse.

All teams are flawed in some way, even well balanced teams don't win all the time because sometimes the top end talent beats them.

The problem for us is that our talent doesn't perform, take the Florida series which was our worst one by far, we lost by 1 goal in 3 games, Mitch had 1g/3 points, Tavares had 1 point, Nylander had 2g/3 points, Matthews had 0g/2points.

All 4 of them are paid like McDrai but play like Macarthur come playoff time. You can't win if your big players don't show up.

Yes he started off bad but he turned it around and held the fort. They hardly had a SOG in the 2nd.

Not as easy to play goal when you have no Tanev and more Rielly, Meyers and Benoit in front of you.

OEL - McCabe: 61.32 xGF%
Rielly - Carlo: 47.73 xGF%
Benoit - Myers: 6.05 xGF%

This third pair was disgusting and I'd get rid of both players. Bring up Rifai

At least once Tanev is back, it's going to push one of Benoit or Myers out of the lineup. Out of the D we've had this year, Benoit has been the worst we've had this year.

4 123:35 10.9 OLIVER EKMAN-LARSSON - CONOR TIMMINS 6 4 2 62 57 52.1 153 106 59.1
5 78:56 7.0 OLIVER EKMAN-LARSSON - SIMON BENOIT 4 5 -1 34 38 47.2 67 76 46.9
6 25:11 2.2 OLIVER EKMAN-LARSSON - PHILIPPE MYERS 1 1 0 10 14 41.7 29 23 55.8

OEL with Timmins yielded very good results. With Benoit or Myers, not so much so. I think they are going to need to give Myers + OEL a bit more time here, and see what they can do with a longer run.

But we're big right..

I guess the defense needs to take some of the blame too.

His movement seemed loose, but I wouldn't rely on cameras for how much net is there. Puck angle is always MUCH different than the views we get

Agree totally, but this is a positional thing I've noticed. Stolarz hanging on the post on a San Jose goal, reacting slowly to a puck off the boards because he drifted too far the other way, looking small in the net , etc are things I didn't notice earlier from him earlier in the season.

I've said all along, pray that Tanev is healthy for the playoffs cause otherwise we're screwed with seeing this much of Rielly, Myers, and Benoit. Particularly Rielly, another -2 and a deserved minus on the night. People say yeah he was on for an empty net goal......but it was caused by his own stupidity on the 6th goal. He is reaching new depths of ineptness as the season goes on. Even his forte, his skating, looks slow and sluggish.

Outplayed but up 4-2 in the second. Couldn’t hang on. Avs outclassed us. The way we were playing I knew we were going to lose. Avs were very good. Our new guys didn’t have great games. (Laughton probably had the worst debut in recent memory) Their new guys did well. We won’t go anywhere until Matthews heals whatever is bothering him. He’s been moping since the 4 nations.

Now, it’s not over. Matthew's needs to heal and get invigorated, new guys need some practice time as it’s the first time on a new team for both. The team is on a tough road segment. Tanev is going to return. Goalies will be better.

There’s another western road trip coming up as well. We’ll be in tight win the division. At this point playing like that, we may be staving off the wild card position.

Our goalies have not proven they can carry the mail. They have so far, but we are starting to see cracks. Even if Tanev is healthy, if our goalies are not stellar, it will likely be another quick exit.

Not sure what is worse. Four more years of Trump or overpaid Marner. Let the loser get his pot of gold elsewhere already. Me first, selfish prick is not winning any cups here even if your crystal balls tell you different.

But having watched him all season he seemed smaller
Last night he seemed really aggressive early. Almost to get rebounds out past the net front traffic and prevent deflections. Then with the lead sat back in hopes his D could absorb some of the pressure.
