Post-Game Talk: Leafs Lose 4-2

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

In the meantime, feel free to join our Discord Server
Agreed. IMO they needed one more good draft year after getting Matthews (only Liljegren the next year?). Then they wouldn't be scrambling for mid to low tier adds every deadline ever since. Instead they chose "accelerate the rebuild" and lost their chance to build properly and win anything of note.
I remember when I wanted to trade JVR and almost everyone here said we must keep him as our "own rental". Most fans have zero patience but yeah, one more good draft year would have been good.

I've also said it many times - I could make a pretty good argument for NEVER adding at the TDL. Really the only time it makes sense IMHO is when your window is closing, and you have 1, maybe 2 more shots at the cup and that's it. But doing it every year, year after year starting before your core players have even hit their prime yet the way we've done is pure madness. But again, most people here don't have the patience and people say we gotta do it because "everyone else does it" and "you gotta go for it because you may never get another chance".

Imagine what this team could be if we traded Marner after losing to MTL in the playoffs, and kept all the picks we traded away at the TDL over the years. Breaks my heart.

The good news is we should still be able to kick off an excellent rebuild by trading Matthews, Nylander, McCabe, Tanev, OEL, Carlo etc.. it sucks we can't turn marner into picks and good young players but at this point it won't make or break a rebuild.
Hopefully there’s new management that makes those trades.

A proper rebuild, which would have included at least three more yrs of evaluation after the Matthews draft, would have been nice. Draft baby draft, evaluate your needs, build a team. Hiring the apprentice and going down the path of “we can and we will” ruined the rebuild.

Nothing but heartache from this team, and sadly the majority of ghe fanbase is happy with mediocrity as long as they can love on their flashy players who bleed the team of cap space all while not contributing much to the effort. The majority of Leaf Nation gets exactly the team they deserve……..

Calgary, Colorado and @ NYR for their next 3. Two playing for playoff spots and Avs are top 5 team. Need to win 2 of 3 or they could drop to WC spot.

Surprised at the Carlo criticism here. I’ve actually liked him. He’s good value for his contract. He’s a second pairing guy.

It’s hard having to babysit Rielly. That dude needs to be trade ASAP.
I've been saying it for a while - Morgan Rielly is the problem. More and more people beginning to see that. Trade him before the league finds out.

Too late. The only team stupid enough to trade for him is us. Look at Laughton

A bold move with no first round picks for the next three drafts.

Can't say I've watched him closely but Bunkis and McKee both said they loved him on last night's post game show which surprised me a little given what I've read on this board. 44 definitely needs to be gone. Hopefully before the draft.

The closer we get the end of the regular season the more teams are starting to prepare playing playoff style hockey and more Leafs Core 4 are becoming.

Matthews can't score a goal unless the opposition goal gifts him one and Marner can't make a pass or take a pass and looks like he is handling a live grenade when the puck is on his stick.

The pressure really seems to be starting to get to these guys expected to carry the load.

You're right, we should just re up Marner and Tavares for whatever they like and run it back until the respective contracts of our core four players become boat anchors as thy continue to regress. I'm sure you're right though and we should run it back, 8th or 9th time is the charm right ?

I’ve noticed the vets on the D have been looking like their gas tanks are getting low, OEL especially looks spent, wouldn’t be surprised if he, Tanev, McCabe start to decline simply because they’re tired……

This teams cooked. Marner refusing to waive was the nail and Laughton looking like he can't skate is salt in the wound

And the goalies are in new territory and nobody knows how well they’ll perform.

Rielly is moveable. We're not getting a top prospect and 1st for him but he's moveable. And Mo doesn't seem like the type of dude to stand in the way of a trade. I'd rather allocate the 7.5m in cap space at this point.

With no 1st rounders until 2028 all this team can do currently is retool. You let Tavares walk if he wants anything more then 6 x 3 and if Marner wants more then Nylander you let him walk as well. Restructure the team with the added cap and hope to catch lightening in a bottle over the next two seasons. If no success after that then you trade Matthews, Nylander, Oel, McCabe, Carlo, tanev and bottom out for a full on rebuild going into 2028. It's really the teams only viable option at this point.
